Resolution No. 18-13RESOLUTION NO. 18-13 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH, FLORIDA REAFFIRMING THE ATLANTIC BEACH CITY COMMISSION'S COMMITMENT TO: SUPPORT PUBLIC SAFETY EFFORTS THROUGH RESOURCES AND TRAINING; PROMOTE VIGILANCE AND AWARENESS TO ENSURE THAT ALL PERSONS IN THE COMMUNITY MAY LIVE, WORK, PLAY, WORSHIP AND LEARN IN THE SAFEST POSSIBLE ENVIRONMENT; AND ENCOURAGE CIVIC AWARENESS AND ENGAGEMENT TO PREVENT ACTS OF COMMUNITY VIOLENCE WHEREAS, people choose to come to Atlantic Beach because of its many special qualities, and they have the right to live, work, play, worship and learn in the safest possible environment; and WHEREAS, while violence knows no boundaries, the citizens of Atlantic Beach historically have lived in a safe community with an extraordinary quality of life and a low crime rate; and WHEREAS, the Atlantic Beach City Commission is saddened and troubled by the recent acts of community violence that have occurred across the country, including, but not limited to, mass shootings, bombings and vehicle ambushes; and WHEREAS, the aforementioned acts of community violence have occurred in public locations such as schools, churches, concerts and outdoor events; and WHEREAS, community safety is not just about preventing crime and injuries — it is also about building a strong, cohesive, vibrant, participatory, and peaceful community; and WHEREAS, the City of Atlantic Beach readily encourages citizens to adhere to the "see something, say something" philosophy of reporting suspicious activity; and WHEREAS, public safety is a fundamental responsibility of elected officials; and the Atlantic Beach City Commission supports the efforts of the Atlantic Beach Police Department to be ready to meet any challenge. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the Atlantic Beach City Commission reaffirms its commitment to do its part to ensure that all persons may live, work, worship, play and learn in the safest possible environment through vigilance, awareness, preparedness, and community engagement PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City of Atlantic Beach, this 26th day of March, 2018.
