RE: Change of Address
Dear Ms. Justice,
This letter is to respond to your email dated May 5th regarding the recent change to
your mailing address. First, I want to try and clear up some of the misunderstanding
that has taken place about this change.
Many property owners assume that they live in the City designated by their mailing
address. This is simply not the case. Your residence has always been within
Jacksonville's City limits. Zip Codes are based on the location of delivery post
offices and often do not correspond to municipal jurisdiction boundaries. The City of
Atlantic Beach shares the Zip Code 32233 with the portion of Jacksonville north of
Atlantic Beach all the way to Mayport. This has been a source of frustration for many
years and has caused confusion with Jacksonville residents seeking services such as
police, code enforcement, animal control, business taxes and building permits from
the City of Atlantic Beach when they should be contacting the City of Jacksonville.
Our request to the U. S. Postal Service for a Zip Code Boundary Review resulted in a
change to the "City Name" portion of the last line of the mailing address for those
citizens who reside in Jacksonville's jurisdiction.
The notification you received from the U. S. Postal Service stated that your delivery
post office will remain as the Atlantic Beach Post Office located at 1001 Mayport
Road. The post office will continue to ensure delivery of your mail with the Atlantic
Beach name for a period of one year. This will allow sufficient time for property
owners in Jacksonville's jurisdiction to notify the appropriate people and businesses
about the address change.
