Item 2D- Purple Heart City.WHEREAS, the City of Atlautic Beach has great admiration and the utmost
gratitude for all the ineii acrid women who have selflessly served their eoLuitry in the
Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS, the City of Atlantic Beach has a large, highly decorated Active
Duty and Veteran population including many Purple Heart recipients; mid
W]UREAS, the Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in present use
and was initially created as the Badge of lvlilitary Merit by General George
Washington in 17 82, and
WHEREAS, the Purple Heart was the first American service award or
decoration made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to
members of the United States Armen Forces who have been wounded or paid the
ultimate sacrifice in combat, with a declared enemy of the United States of America;
and
WHExEAS, the mission of the Military Order of the Ptuple Heart, chartered
by au act of Congress, is ,to foster an environment of goodwill among the combat-
woLuided veteran members and their fa=u lies, promote patriotism, support legislative
initiatives, and most importantly, make slue we "never forget"; and
WHEREAS, the City of Atlantic Beach appreciates the sacrifices oLa Purple
Heart recipients have made defending our freedoms and believe it is h4iportant that
we acknowledge them for their iinmense courage and unselfish service to their
Nation.
NOW, 'IHL+'R FU1ZL+', be it resolved that I, Ellen Glasser, Mayor of the City
of Atlantic Beach, r iorida do hereby proclaim the City of Atlantic Beach as
and encourage the citizens and residents of Atlantic Beach to show their
appreciation for the sacrifices Purple Henn recipients have wade i« defending our
freedoms, to recognize their valor, and to show theiii the honor and support they
have earned.
