Depending on the forecast model, this may be another busy season. The City staff and Police Department have developed a comprehensive plan to address nearly every potential disaster to protect people, pets, and property. Please do your part to prepare before the storm. (Note to self: need carry case for dog.) Start by signing up for notifications by registering for Alert Atlantic Beach. Follow the link on the coab.us city website. The City website has been extensively redesigned. I invite you to explore the new format. You will find up-to-date information on city services, recreational offerings, and upcoming events. Most importantly, the video stream and meeting minutes from the City Commission, boards, and committees are easily accessible. Your involvement in city affairs and your input on matters before them is critical to the democratic process. Let us hear from you! Spring has finally sprung! With it comes tea turtle season, running from May to October. To protect these precious resources, humans must refrain from projecting any artificial light onto the sand from windows, flashlights, street lights, cameras, or campfires. Also, help keep our beaches free of deep holes, equipment, and plastic trash that could trap an unwary turtle. Dear Citizens, F ro m t h e C om m i S S i o n e r Recently, all commissioners have taken an oath of civility. We agreed to listen politely to other viewpoints, affirm the dignity of others, and to promote mutual respect. We will practice civility when speaking to citizens, debating among ourselves, and most definitely while communicating online. Likewise, we encourage you to practice civility during public meetings and most assuredly while communicating online. Let your comments and posts promote civility and neighborliness. Together we can make Atlantic Beach an even stronger community. With the busy summer season comes the perennial problem: parking. Know that the dedicated citizens who volunteered to serve on the Parking Committee have been diligently attacking the problem. In the near future, you should expect to see more lines painted to delineate specific parking spots. The Police Department will be vigilant about issuing warnings and tickets. They also have other long-term solutions in the works. In the meantime, bike or walk whenever practical. For visiting the Town Center, I highly recommend the service provided by Beach Buggies. Download the app, request a ride, and they will call to say they are on the way. Local businesses subsidize the service, so give your driver a nice tip, and call for a ride again later when you are ready to go home. Wishing you a safe and delightful summer. I hope to see you at our local festivals, concerts, or in the park. Warmest regards, Candace Kelly City Comissioner Sign up for Alert Atlantic Beach The Florida Division of Emergency Management has rolled out an emergency alert system just in time for hurricane season. Alert Florida enables municipalities to send emails, text messages and voice messages notifying citizens of potential and pending emergencies. In Atlantic Beach, the system is called Alert Atlantic Beach. Sign up by visiting www.coab/alertAB. 9875 Make sure your house number can be seen from the road. Clearly display your house number so emergency responders can quickly find you. Maintain your sprinkler system If you notice dead patches in your lawn, you may have a problem with your sprinkler system. Fixing the problem will save you some cash, get your lawn back in shape, and conserve water. Mowers and edgers sometimes break or rotate sprinkler heads. Cars run over them. We’ve all seen the geyser shooting water into the air and down the street, or the sprinkler that waters the pavement. These broken and misdirected sprinklers not only waste water, but can cause erosion and pollute downstream waters. One broken head can waste 100 gallons of water in 10 minutes. And if you’re not home while the system runs, you may not know there’s a problem for weeks. That’s a big water bill. Check your system once in a while to make sure all your sprinklers are putting the water where it belongs. You’ll save money and water. Remember: water only on your assigned days per week, before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Homes with ODD addresses – Wednesday and Saturday Homes with EVEN addresses – Thursday and Sunday Non-residential – Tuesday and Friday For more information, visit www.floridaswater.com See something? Say something! If you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, post it on social media after you call the Atlantic Beach Police Department. Our non-emergency number is (904) 247-5859. We need YOU to help us keep our city safe. Please don’t hesitate to call us! We love our seniors in AB Senior programs are offered weekly at the Gail Baker Center at 10:30 am.
