At the subject project, the following comments apply:
The Family Room exterior side wall was not constructed with vertical full-height
sheathing panels as shown in Detail B/SD-2. To account for the different uplift load
path, additional threaded rods were added along the side wall extending up to the second
floor sole plate. The second floor walls were installed with vertical full-height sheathing.
This change is acceptable as long as the following conditions are met:
0 No panel is less than 24" in height.
0 The upper panels extend all the way to the top of the double plate (full-
height sheathing).
0 All panel edges are blocked
The remaining portions of the home were reportedly constructed with full-height
sheathing and the typical specified details apply.
The second floor gable walls were balloon framed, and therefore bracing specified in
Detail N/SD-2 using GBC clips is no longer appropriate. The balloon framed studs are
adequate without bracing up to a total stud length of 14 feet. The attached detail should
be followed for the wall portions where the overall stud length exceeds 14 feet.
