CALCULATE YOUR "WATER FOOTPRINT"
JUST IMAGINE
Background: May 2008
should see the long awaited
start of reconstruction of
Mayport Road, including
raised and landscaped
medians.
While this year-long effort
will change the physical
look of the road, the
Atlantic Beach Commission recognized that "if
the end of the construction project had no other
positive impact on the adjacent areas then we
would have missed an opportunity to raise the
quality of life of Residents, increase public safety,
and attract businesses and jobs to the area'.
Instead, the Commission has included in their
strategic planning for the future a concerted
effort to dedicate and focus resources on the
commercial and residential areas along Mayport
Road that might include:
• Bringing several groups together that can work to
improve conditions by designation and meeting(s)
of stakeholders – Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville
(Mayor and Sheriff), Mayport Navy, Business
owners, Churches, residents and Schools
• A definition of the area and assessment of the
strengths and challenges in the area, which
might include:
• Police presence
• Encouraging new housing including
affordable rental units
• Repair, rehabilitation or elimination of
substandard rental units to residential blight
• Support and encouragement of neighborhood
associations and other groups that
will take an active part in improving their
neighborhoods
• Expanded recreational opportunities
• Zoning overlay in the commercial areas
• Cleaning up undergrowth and improving
lighting
• An ongoing Public Relations plan

H2O Conserve is a new Web site created to help Americans look at how much water they really
use. Not just what goes through the meter—but the total amount of water needed to maintain
your lifestyle.
We don't realize it, but water is needed to produce the food we eat, the electricity we burn, the fuel
we put in our cars and the products we buy. Go to wwwh2oconserve.com and answer the questions
in the Water Calculator. You'll find out what your "water footprint" is and how it compares with the
national average.
The Web site also provides water saving tips and interesting articles. The site was created jointly
by the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, GRACE (a non-profit environmental
organization), Food &WaterWatch, and The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future.
For more information on saving water, go to www.floridaswater.com.
Remember, water your lawn no more than 2 days per week, before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.
CITY OFFERS OPTIONAL SECOND PICKUP PER WEEK FOR
RESIDENTIAL GARBAGE AND LOWERS PRICE FOR SECOND TOTER
A few residents have complained about the
smell of garbage after the change last summer
from twice per week pickup to once per week.
In response, the city is now offering an optional
second pickup per week at the resident's choice.
An additional fee of $17.10 per month will be
charged for this service. To keep down the
confusion between sanitation drivers and
billing, residents choosing to take this service
will be required to sign up for a minimum
of one year. The waste hauler will pick the
second day per week of service, depending
on your location. For example, if your regular
collection is on Monday, the hauler may choose
Thursday or Friday depending on their workload.
However, once the second day schedule is set,
they will pick your garbage up on the same
day of each week except for holidays when all
pickups will be moved back one day.
For those residents who continue with a one
day per week pickup, but regularly have more
refuse than can be placed in your 96 gallon
toter, the price to provide a second toter is
being lowered from $17.10 per month to
$8.50 per month. A resident who routinely
(more than once per month) has more trash
than will fit in a single toter may be required
by the City to have a second toter. Again, to
minimize confusion between sanitation drivers
and billing, residents choosing or required to
take this additional service will be required to
sign up for a minimum of one year.
If you have any questions about billing issues
you can call City Hall at 247-5816. Questions
about services should be directed to the Public
Works Department at 247-5834.
COMMISSION MEETING TIME CHANGED
The time of the regular city commission meetings has been changed to begin at 6 p.m. rather than
7:15 p.m. These meetings will still be held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month.
