MOSQUITO CONTROL
The City of Atlantic Beach Public VVorks
Department is trying to identify and eliminate
mosquito -breeding sites within the city limits.
Potential areas of concern include:
•Artificial containers on private property holding
rainwater can and will breed mosquitoes.
• Depressions in woodland areas that hold
rainwater breed mosquitoes.
The inspector must obtain the property owners
permission to inspect and/or treat these sites.
Please call Public Works, 247-5834 if you
have information relating to mosquito -breeding
sites. There is no charge to the residents for
the inspection.
City of Jacksonville Mosquito Control
The Mosquito Control Division is part of
the Environmental Resource Management
Department of the City of Jacksonville.
The Division provides county -wide mosquito
surveillance and control.
We've all felt the annoying sting and
lingering itch of mosquito bites and
wondered, "Can't something be done to
eliminate these pests?" The answer is
YES. Something is being done everyday
to control mosquitoes in Jacksonville.
Take a look through the COJ web site to
see what is being done to control mosquitoes
in your area.
To request Mosquito Control to inspect or
spray your property or neighborhood, contact
City Link online (http://ecare.coj.net/) and
follow the steps to complete your request, or
call (904) 630 -CITY (2489) and an operator
will assist you.
Home Grown Mosquitoes
If the mosquitoes bothering you are sneaky
ankle biters under the picnic table with black
and white dots (aedes aegypti), or ferocious
mosquitoes biting you everywhere with vivid
black and white stripes (aedes albopictus),
you should start looking for containers
nearby filled with rainwater and "mosquito
wigglers." Dump 'em out.
Don't swat these
critters! You'll
only push
the toxins
in. Instead,
flick them off.

Conserve Water While Spring Cleaning
It's time for spring cleaning, and here are some tips
to save our water resources (and your money) while
doing household tasks:
General Cleaning:
• Never let water go down the drain if there may
be another use for it, such as watering plants.
• To clean up driveways and walkways, use a
broom or blower, not a hose.
• Make sure hoses have shutoff nozzles and
check hoses for leaks. Turn hoses off when
you're finished using them.
Washing Machines:
• Set the washing machine load size appropriately.
• Check hoses for leaks regularly.
• Use the shortest wash cycle for lightly soiled
loads. Normal and permanent press wash cycles
use more water.
• Pretreat stains to avoid rewashing.
• If your washer needs replacing, consider a front-
loading washer. These can save one-third the
water usage when doing laundry and are energy
efficient also.
For more water saving measures, check the
St. Johns River Water Management District's web
site at www.sjrwmd.com or www.floridaswater.com.
Remember — No watering between 10:00 a.m. and
4:00 p.m.!

CITY CLERK
FROM THE MAYOR
One of the many things that make Atlantic
Beach special is the involvement of citizens
on committees that shape our future. The
committees include the Code Enforcement
Board, the Community Development Board,
the Tree Conservation Board, the Pension
Board, and the Cultural Arts and Recreation
Advisory Board. As can be noted by their titles, these Boards
enforce city rules and regulations, shape the physical and
esthetic development of the city, make recommendations and
enforce our tree regulations, assist in investing our pension
funds, and develop plans and programs for art and recreation
for our citizens. They are each vital parts of making the city
work. A simple form obtained from the City Clerk is all it
takes to volunteer to be part of the process. If anyone
has a background or interest in serving
their community, I urge you to come
to City Hall and fill out an application.
Our City Clerk, Donna Bussey, can also
provide additional information about
Board functions and time requirements.
