Director of Public Works DATE: Apri121, 2003 BACKGROUND: During the initial excavation of the pavement at Ocean Blvd. and Ahern Street, the contractor encountered very thick asphalt, 4-5", underlaid by the original brick paving from Ocean Blvd. This brick was the same brick that we encountered and used for construction of some areas in the Town Center.- It was originally thought that the contractor could salvage some of the brick from this 3.5' wide trench, but most of the brick was in poor condition and the time to clean and store the small amount that would be obtained was unreasonable. Since the contractor bid on the milling and replacement of approximately 1-'/z to 2" of asphalt and expected limerock base below the asphalt, the thicker asphalt and brick required additional work. He submitted a price of $6.00 per linear foot to remove and dispose of the brick and the additional attached asphalt. If the brick goes from Ahern to 7th Street, the entire length will be 2,560 linear feet. The contractor will only be paid for the length of roadway underlaid by brick. RECOMMENDATION: Approve Change Order No. 1. BUDGET: Funds will come from the 10% Contingency amount of $26,976.50. ATTACHMENT: Change Order No. 1.
