Allowable Capacity
The allowable system capacity of the assembled Smart Jack� steel components Is 30
kips (30,000 pounds). Axial compression tests completed at an independent laboratory
on the assembled Smart Jack�system,with and without a precast concrete footing,
resulted in ultimate values between 56 kips and 90 kips.
While the rigidity and strength of the Smart Jack� components benefit installation and
overall product stability,the allowable load applied to the Smart Jack� system will
nearly always be limited by the bearing capacity of the existing soil. The well-
compacted crushed stone or recycled concrete base is a proven method to increase
support for the higher bearing pressure condition immediately below the concrete
footing, and then to absorb and distribute lower pressures to the existing soils. Except
in extreme soft conditions, allowable loads on the order of 10 to 15 kips are typically
achievable without future appreciable settlement. Should settlement of the Smart
Jack� system occur, adjustments are made easily by extending the all-thread rod.
The Smart Jack� Is designed to support axial compression loads only. The Smart
iack�should not be used In applications where the system is Intended to resist lateral
loads.
Corrosion Protection
Thetube steel used forthe Smart.lack� is manufactured with a triple-layer, in-line
galvanized coating. This coating process consists of: (1) a uniform hot-dip zinc
galvanizing layer; (2) an intermediate conversion coatingto Inhibit the formation of
white rust and enhance corrosion resistance; and (3)a clearorganictop coatingto
further enhance appearance and durability. The inside of the pier tube also has a zinc-
rich coating.
The remaining steel components of the Smart JackT�; i.e.,SJ35OTP,SJ125ATR,SJ35GTI,
and SJ350SP come standard as zinc-plated In accordance with ASTIVI B633, "Standard
Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings of Zinc on Iron and Steel".

Dear My. Cleveland:
I have reviewed the settlement issue at 886 East Coast Drive, Atlantic Beach, FL 32233 and have
the following comments:
I. The structure was built in 1934 and is a two-story frame house with wood siding.
2. The foundation is original brick piers.
3. Them is a crawl space.
4. The floor system is the original wood beams and joists.
5. A complete interior renovation is in the process of design.
6. Interior floors and drywall have been removed to expose the structure to determine the
amount of retrofit necessary.
7. Prior to removal of the sub-floor,there was significant floor slope noticeable while walking
on the floors.
8, Floor settlement was measured to be over 1.8 inches along the southern portion of the
house.

9. In several areas,specifically under the kitchen and bathrooms,floorjoists have deteriorated
and need to be repaired.
10. Some of the floor joists have been repaired.
11. Soil borings were not taken.
12. It is likely that differential settlement will continue to occur unless the foundation is
stabilized.
13. To stabilize the foundation,we recommend installing 29 SmartJacks throughout the entire
house to support the existing wood beams and the perimeter wall. The SmartJacks me to
be installed per manufacturer's instructions, be from one to three feet long, and located as
shown on the attached sketch.
