CTTY OF ATLANTIC BEACH
CITY COMMISSION MEETING
STAFF REPORT
AGENDA ITEM: Request from Wilson and Wilson Optical, located at b15 Atlantic
Boulevard, to aIlow a new sign of conforming height and size to be
installed within the five-foot required setback.
SUBMITTED BY: Jim Hanson, City Mana
DATE: July 7, 2003
BACKGROUND: In April of this year, the owners of Wilson and Wilson Optical requested
a six-month period of time to allow then existing: sign to remain in place,
during which time they would consider options related to signage for the
business
The Wilson's have now proposed a new monument type.. sign, which
complies with the current size and height regulations; but have requested
that the sign be located within the required five-foot setback. The
existing building is a nonconforming structure located very close to the
front property line, and there is limited opportunity: to place~a monument
sign in a location that complies with the five-foot setback,. which would. be
visible from passing vehicular traffic..
BUDGET: No budget issues
RECOMMENDATION: Staff does not recommend that any variance be approved for the setback
on this sign. The sign is too close to the sidewalk and will significantly
restrict the vision of motorists exiting the parking lot. This could be
hazardous to pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.
