Find Us On Facebook Visit us on facebook! www.coab.us/facebook Thanks to our city, state and federal partners for responding to protect our city and coastline by funding an accelerated round of beach renourishment. Work may commence as early as October. This was no small achievement given that Hurricane Irma hit so soon after Hurricane Matthew work was completed. Particular thanks go to Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry and his staff; the Jacksonville City Council and our representative, Bill Gulliford; and U.S. Rep. John Rutherford. You’ve been busy, but so have we. We’ve been busy working for you. Big projects have included acquiring some of Selva Preserve; launching a review of our land development regulations; starting work on a parks master plan; and making plans to build the school path along Sherry Drive and Seminole Road. Less visible projects include balancing next year’s budget while maintaining our current millage rate, examining a Complete Streets approach for Mayport Road, and reviewing our tree ordinance. I’ll devote the rest of this message to three issues. Greetings! Over the summer months, I hope you found time to have some 1. school year and the heat index drops a bit. fun and recharge! F ro m t h e m ay o r With a new season upon us, it is great when kids start a new 2. This issue is water, water, and more water. Please get engaged as we update our stormwater master plan. So far, we have seen models and heard from Jones Edmunds & Associates, a top firm we contracted to study our current plan. Our infrastructure is old. Fixes are costly and will have to be prioritized. We need a regional strategy. We are considering new and bigger pipes, pump stations, bigger culverts, backflow valves, possible land acquisition, and other ways to control volume and eliminate choke points at our outfalls. As we analyze the data, the City will engage in a parallel data collection effort to examine the impact of development on flooding in some of neighborhoods. 3. Finally, we recently conducted an employee climate survey in response to concerns expressed about fairness in our workplace. Our employees work hard for you, so it is incumbent on city leaders and managers to do what we can to foster a positive work environment for them. Knowing we cannot be all things to all people, we collected data to get a baseline understanding of our work culture and environment. The good news is that a large majority of employees take pride in working here and they feel valued and respected. The “less great” news is that many employees lack confidence in personnel practices relative to compensation and promotions. I am committed to working with City Manager Joe Gerrity on recommendations for improvement. We have a great team of committed employees and elected officials. I am truly fortunate to live and work in such a special place and to have the extraordinary opportunity to serve you. Thank you and be safe, everyone! In Gratitude, Ellen Glasser #WeAreAB Back to School Safety If your child rides a school bus to and from school, teach your child to always play it SAFE: • Stay five steps away from the curb. • Always wait for the bus driver to tell you when to board. • Face forward after finding a seat on the bus. • Exit the bus when it stops, look left-right-left, and take five steps away from the bus toward the curb. Walking to school is great exercise and gets kids ready to face their studies. Children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult or someone who will make sure they walk safely. Teach your child to always: • Use the sidewalk when possible, and if there isn’t a sidewalk, walk on the edge of the street facing traffic. • Focus when walking near traffic – this is no time for horseplay. • Use crosswalks to cross the street when possible. • Look left-right-left before crossing any street. Kids love riding their bikes and it can be a fun, quick way to get to school. Be sure to do these simple things to keep your bike ride safe: • Always wear a properly fitted helmet and securely fasten the chin strap. • Ride in the same direction as traffic and obey traffic signs and signals. • Keep an eye out for other pedestrians. • Never use electronics while riding – they are distracting. Let’s all remember to slow down when driving through school zones and pay attention to posted speed limits. ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? Registration for fall flag football begins Sept. 10.
