Tree Preservation Specialist Peter Nickodem 127 Oceanforest Dr N Atlantic Beach, FL 32233 Dear Mr. Nickodem, On Tuesday April 24, 2018 1 evaluated the health and structure of a large live oak (Quercus virginiana) in your back yard that was growing near the home foundation. Concern was expressed that the roots of the tree were destroying the foundation of the home. I performed a Level 2 Basic Assessment, which is a detailed visual inspection of a tree and its surrounding site. The Level 2 Assessment includes a 360 - degree visual inspection from ground level on the tree and sound testing of the accessible portions of the trunk with a rubber mallet to listen for tonal variations that may indicate dead external tissue or internal hollows. The inspection was done in accordance with ANSI A300 Standards on Tree Risk Assessment and the companion publication Best Management Practices, Tree Risk Assessment."2 MAN r LR AkW)k:S I 0 ISA 5/9/2018 Figure 1. The home was constructed very close to the root plate of the tree and then mulched. This created a large mass of roots growing along the exterior of the home. Advanced Tree Care, Inc. 243 Shamrock Rd. St. Augustine, FL 32086 904-794-4200 infoac-)shadetreeexpert.com www.shadetreeexpert.com The live oak had a trunk diameter of 20 inches DBH (diameter at breast height). The health of the tree was good. No nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or signs of reduced health were visible. The structure of the tree was fair. Sounding with a rubber mallet did indicate internal an internal hollow that was restricted to the lower area of the trunk. The wound was very old and the tree appears to have compartmentalized and contained the wound well (figure 1). Any structural deficiencies caused by the decay can be significantly mitigated by performing end weight canopy reduction on the upper canopy lateral limbs per ANSI zA300 standards. The foliage growing inside the window sill of the home manifested as a result of small oak roots Figure 2. Moisture from the mulch allowed roots to grow between the softened stucco wall siding. No significant foundation damage has occurred. that had developed along the exterior wall. Because the home exterior walls were stucco, the mulched area between the tree root flare and the home had allowed moisture to soften the stucco over time and create an environment that allowed the small superficial oak roots to grow up between the stucco wall and the foundational wall (image 2). When the root encountered a small opening near the window sill it had grown toward the sunlight of the window (image 3). Inspection of the root flare with a probe did not indicate large lateral root penetration beneath the poured - slab home foundation. No structural damage was observed other than the superficial stucco damage. This can be easily corrected by removing the mulch near the home and cutting away the small roots superficial tree roots near the home. Figure 3. Arrow indicates roots that grew into the home from an opening around the stucco wall and the window sill. N11A rL,R AKHORIST ISA q] Advanced Tree Gare, Inc. 243 Shamrock Rd. If there is an active and obvious area of damage then I recommend showing that your HOA first. The health and structure of your tree are fine and I cannot recommend removal based on those two criteria. I do not like amending reports and some time has passed since our visit. Unfortunately I would like to petition the Oceanwalk HOA and Atlantic Beach to have the tree taken down. Not necessarily for the roots intruding in-between the stucco but the tree leaning against the house where the roof was notched to accommodate the tree during initial construction. I believe the tree has outgrown the notch and is now rubbing against the roof as evidenced by the twisted drip edge. Can you add that concern to your report? Do you have any recommendations on Tree service companies that can handle this job? Thanks,Pete On May 9, 2018, at 9:36 PM, Daniel Lippi <danielvlip@yahoo.00m> wrote: Peter, Thanks for your patience.
