RE: Unsafe Building
Dear Ms. Tratarina:
This letter is in response to an inspection made this morning at 900 Plaza Drive of
the east exterior wall of apartment 111 which has been damaged by vehicle impact.
The inspection revealed that the east end wall of the two story apartment building
has been damaged leaving a forty-eight inch by thirty-six inch unsupported hole.
Additional cracking and shifting along the upper corners of the wall indicates possible
unseen severe damage. The wall construction is double hollow brick that has limited wire
reinforcement. The adjacent second floor has been shored with four by four posts and
beams which appear to be relieving some structural floor loading to the damaged end
wall. However, there is currently no support provided for the large wall opening caused
by the vehicle damage.
As we discussed, occupants of apartments 112 and 111 should be relocated until
further assessment is made by a State of Florida licensed engineer. The City will post
both apartments as being unsafe for occupancy. Repair of the end wall will require
building permits to be obtained by a State of Florida licensed contractor.
