Atlantic Beach elected officials and City staff
wish you and your family a safe and joyous
holiday season.
www.coab.us • (904) 247-5800
Election season has passed -- many thanks to the thousands who voted.
Now we can put away the campaign signs and turn back to the business of
home rule. We recently hosted a series of events designed by Deputy City
Manager Kevin Hogencamp to celebrate Florida City Government Week. We
hope you enjoyed them. When you encounter an Atlantic Beach employee,
please thank them for all the good work they do to keep the city running so
smoothly.
Your fellow citizens have been diligently serving the community on
boards and committees trying to resolve matters such as the environment,
recreational events, the tree codes, pension funds, and parking. Let them hear
from you and let City Clerk Donna Bartle hear about any potential volunteers to
serve on those committees.
City staff is working on the results of a utilities rate study, a human
resources climate survey, and a storm/waste water study. The utilities are self-
funded; you can expect to see a small increase in your monthly bill that will
help pay for upgrades in the future. On the other hand, hardening of our storm/
waste water systems will be extraordinarily expensive. To prepare for those
costs, we plan to hire a professional lobbyist who can bring our needs to the attention
of key legislators. Also, our grant writers are looking for grants or matching funds that
we could use, and we’ll collaborate with Neptune Beach where possible. We will also
consider the effect of 50-percent impervious surface ratios on localized flooding and
neighboring properties. There is no easy fix for stormwater, but if we don’t address it,
our lives and property will be a greater risk.
Our hometown is warm and friendly all year round, especially during the
holidays. The trees in Beaches Town Center will be decorated and lighted throughout
December and, among other events, the holiday celebration kicks off with a bicycle
parade through Beaches Town Center on Dec. 1; Artisans Faire will be held Dec. 6 at
Adele Grage Cultural Center; Santa visits the 200 First Street courtyard on Dec. 20;
and Deck the Chairs in Jacksonville Beach continues through Jan. 1. The month has
plenty of opportunities to help others, too. Chose a child or family to shop for from the
tree in Adele Grage; there are Toys for Tots collection points at many locations; and
the Salvation Army kettles in front of Publix never stop ringing!
Wishing each of you a joyous holiday season and a prosperous New Year.
Regards,
Candace Kelly
HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION JAN. 19
The City of Jacksonville will hold a household hazardous waste and E-waste
collection from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Jacksonville Beach Public
Works parking lot (1460 Shetter Ave). For information, call Jacksonville’s Solid
Waste Division at (904) 387-8847. A list of items that will be accepted at this event
is published at www.coj.net.
Give a child a holiday surprise this
season by opening your heart and
being an angel. Atlantic Beach has
children in the community in need
of gifts this holiday season. Please
consider visiting the Adele Grage
Cultural Center at 716 Ocean Blvd.
between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday
through Friday to select a toy tag
from the Angel Tree and make this
holiday special for a child in our
community. Toys will be donated
to the Atlantic Beach Toy Drive.
Please return unwrapped gifts to
Adele Grage by Dec. 19. For more
information, call 247-5828.
CRIME PREvENTION DURINg THE HOLIDAY SEASON
The Police Department would like to wish the Atlantic Beach community a safe and
peaceful holiday season. Thefts can become more frequent during the holiday season,
partly because of increased opportunity. Whether you are staying home or leaving
town, we hope you will keep these safety tips in mind:
#1 BE AWARE OF STRANGERS – Be proactive and call the Police Department
to report suspicious persons or activity. Be prepared to tell us “where, what, who,
when and how” by dialing 247-5859 or 911.
#2 KEEP THINGS OUT OF SIGHT – Close your garage door and window
blinds. Put valuables inside drawers or cupboards, out of view.
#3 LOCK UP! – Always secure doors and windows -- on your car and home.
Holiday Sanitation Schedule
There will be no garbage pickup on December 25; routes are pushed back by one day
that week. If your normal service day is Monday, you will be serviced on Tuesday. If
your normal service is on Tuesday, you will be serviced on Wednesday; and so on.
SHORE PROTECTION PROJECT UNDER WAY
The much-anticipated project to restore critically eroded beaches and dunes is now
under way.
About 850,000 cubic yards of sand is being placed on about 8 miles of eroded
beaches, including Jacksonville, Neptune and Atlantic beaches and the southern mile of
Hanna Park. The beach placement area began in late October at the southern end of the
county (Mills Lane) and is working its way up north to Atlantic Beach.
The project's completion is set for January 2019 - weather dependent. Construction
operations are running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
During construction, the contractor closes about 1,200 feet of beach at a time;
however, other areas of the beach will remain open to residents and visitors. The work
typically proceeds about 500 feet along the shore each day. Swimmers and surfers are
strongly encouraged to avoid the construction area observe safety signs both on the beach
and in water to avoid injury.
The U.S. Army Corps asks the public to use caution around construction areas and
to be patient with temporary construction noise as the project progresses.
Project updates and progress maps will be available at www.saj.usace.army.mil and
facebook.com/JacksonvilleDistrict.
