A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH REQUESTING THAT
THE DUVAL COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD FORMALLY AND PERMANENTLY
CHANGE THE OFFICIAL NAME OF MAYPORT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO
MAYPORT COASTAL SCIENCES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
WHEREAS, Mayport Elementary School (#277) has been serving the coastal communities of
Duval County since 1963; and
WHEREAS, Mayport Elementary School has been a coastal sciences magnet school since 2011;
and
WHEREAS, Mayport Elementary School has been unofficially known as Mayport Coastal
Sciences Elementary School since that time; and
WHEREAS, the vision of Mayport Elementary School is to enable all students to reach their full
potential as creative, inquiring learners who respect Florida's marine ecosystems; and
WHEREAS, the mission of Mayport Elementary School is to teach students to become self-
directed researchers, analytical thinkers, problem solvers, prolific readers and writers, and lifelong
stewards of the coastal environment. The methodology is inquiry -based, differentiated, and aligned with
preparing our students to enter any high school accelerated program; and
WHEREAS, Mayport Elementary School is located near the Mayport village area of Duval County,
a strategic site for planned waterfront improvements.
WHEREAS, Mayport Elementary School partners with or has partnered with Naval Station
Mayport, the University of North Florida, the United States Coast Guard, and the professional maritime
community to study and understand the importance of our local ecosystems; and
WHEREAS, Mayport Elementary School also has a strategic partnership with Jacksonville
University, the educational partner of Ocearch, a nonprofit research organization that tracks and
monitors marine species such as great white and tiger sharks along the East Coast and elsewhere; and
WHEREAS, plans are under way to relocate the Ocearch to Mayport village, thus creating a world-
class shark education center and positioning Mayport village as a maritime research hub.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Commission of the City of Atlantic Beach,
Florida, as follows:
Section 1. The City of Atlantic Beach hereby requests that the Duval County School Board formally
and permanently change the official name of Mayport Elementary School to Mayport Coastal Sciences
Elementary School.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its passage and adoption.
