The Florida Building Code requires that this written notice occur at least 10 days before beginning any demolition or excavation. You can check with the Building Department (247- 5826) if you think an adjacent property may be scheduled for demolition or excavation with heavy equipment. Owners of rental and leased property should be aware that all construction work still requires building permits and that it must be done by licensed contractors. Property owners can obtain permits to work on their own property when the property is for their own use. www.coab.us • (904) 247-5800 Happy New Year to all in Atlantic Beach! I’m happy to report the City Commission is hitting the ground running in this new year. January 9 will have seen us hold a visioning workshop to set goals for 2019. I’m excited to see this practice become an annual tradition. Maintaining a shared list of priorities during 2018 provided a good foundation for the commission to work together in reviewing and enacting policy for our city. The commission will also be tackling a variety of issues over the next couple months, ranging from complete streets to stormwater management, hardening our city against severe storms to impervious/ pervious ratios, and more. I invite you to join the conversation on these topics and others. There are many ways to stay in the loop with what’s happening at city hall. 1) Sign up for Atlantic Beach's e-newsletter – Visit our website and use the email address of your choice to receive monthly updates on city happenings, events, news, and more. Get started at coab.us/list.aspx or email info@coab.us. 2) Attend a meeting of the City Commission – Regular meetings are held in the Commission Chamber of City Hall at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. In December, the only regular meeting is held at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday. 3) Like the City of Atlantic Beach on Facebook – You’ll get updates right in your newsfeed. The cost is $25; registration is due Feb. 28. Applications are available at the Police Department or by calling Lt. David Cameron at (904) 247-5859, EXT. 5950. Bicycle Safety Tips Bicycles are legally considered "vehicles" on Florida’s roadways. This means bicyclists must obey the rules of the road like drivers of any other vehicle and must be treated as equal users by all other vehicles. The best way to avoid collisions is to be prepared and to be aware of other vehicles around you. Avoid common bicyclist errors and common motorist errors committed around bicyclists by following these safety tips: • Obey traffic signs and signals - Bicycles must follow the rules of the road like other vehicles. • never ride against traffic - Motorists aren't looking for bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the road. State law and common sense require that bicycles be operated like other vehicles. • don’t pass on the right - Motorists may not look for or see a bicycle passing on the right. • Scan the road behind you - Learn to look back over your shoulder without losing your balance or swerving. Some riders use rear-view mirrors. • Keep both hands ready to brake - You may not stop in time if you brake one-handed. Allow extra distance for stopping in the rain since brakes are less efficient when wet. • Always wear a helmet and never ride with headphones • dress for the weather - Wear bright clothing. • Make eye contact with drivers - Assume that other drivers don't see you until you are sure that they do. Eye contact is important with any driver who might pose a threat to your safety. • Look out for road hazards - Watch out for grates, gravel, sand or debris. • Use lights at night - The law requires a white headlight. • Keep your bike in good repair - Adjust your bike to fit you and keep it working properly. Check brakes and tires regularly. Routine maintenance is simple and you can learn to do it yourself. LIKE PARKS?
