Homeowners and contractors should know that inspections can be scheduled during business hours and after-hours on the first Saturday morning (until noon) and the second Wednesday evening (until 8 p.m.) of each month. To schedule an inspection, call 247-5814. www.coab.us • (904) 247-5800 Happy New Year! On behalf of our special city, I hope that your holiday season was joyful and that your coming year is a great and memorable one. Last year, city staff and elected officials stayed focused on the priorities we set last January. Big projects included the Selva Preserve acquisition; the ongoing update of land development regulations; and the stormwater master plan update that identified costly infrastructure needs. Efforts to revitalize Mayport Road, find parking solutions, preserve our tree canopy, and partner with the National Parks Service on a parks plan are under way! We are also queuing up for a citywide and neighborhood rebranding initiative. This month, we will review -- and perhaps add to -- our priority list for the coming year. I will personally advocate for making our city more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly. I also hope to make sustainability and greenness a priority. As a small town with limited resources, I am thrilled to partner with local nonprofit organizations like Beaches Go Green to educate on recycling and the dangers of plastic; the local U.S. Green Building Council to walk us through LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification; and the Northeast Florida Green Chamber to promote sustainability in our business community. All have “boots on the ground” right here in Atlantic Beach. HAVE YOU HEARD? We are considering a possible annexation of land from Jacksonville into Atlantic Beach. We have proposed that Jacksonville support efforts to annex a box of land west of Mayport Road, north of Dutton Island Road, and south of Assisi Lane. While we would be responsible to provide additional services for this area (we already provide water and sewer), we expect this would have minimal impact on the daily lives of our current residents. To see a map of the area being considered for annexation, visit www.coab.us/projects and click on the Annexation tab. Short term, this would offer clear benefits to those who live in the annex area, create consistency along Mayport Road, enhance public safety, and increase our footprint of saltwater marsh ecosystem at Dutton Island. Long term, this has the potential to benefit the entire city as properties increase in value, additional commercial development takes place, and the business corridor is revitalized. Procedurally and legally, the decision will largely be up to stakeholders inside the box, but we want Atlantic Beach residents to be knowledgeable and engaged. We plan to explain the details and provide opportunities for public comment in January about what this process could look like. As always, it is my great honor to serve you. In Gratitude, Ellen Glasser #WeAreAB dONNA MARATHON COMINg FEB. 10 Be aware of traffic impacts, road closures The 12th annual DONNA Marathon is Sunday, Feb. 10. Runners love our community because of all of our spirited supporters and curb crews who come out and cheer them on as they complete their journey to the finish line. This year, the entire half marathon (and first half of the full marathon) will be run in Atlantic Beach. As a result, access in Atlantic Beach may be inhibited for up to seven hours beginning at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. Please take note of these additional traffic impacts in Atlantic Beach and call the race headquarters at 355-PINK with any problems or concerns you may have: • Access to Beaches Town Center may be inhibited from noon Friday, Feb. 8, to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. • Vehicles will be prohibited from parking on impacted streets after 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. If your vehicle is towed, contact Beach Body Towing Co. at 249-9974. • Atlantic Boulevard westbound from Third Street (A1A) to Royal Palms Drive will be closed from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. The City looks forward to welcoming this year’s participants and encourages everyone to come out and support the fight to finish breast cancer. For more information, visit www.breastcancermarathon.com. HAZARdOUS WASTE COLLECTION JAN. 19 The City of Jacksonville will hold a household hazardous waste and E-waste collection from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Jacksonville Beach Public Works parking lot (1460 Shetter Ave). For information, call Jacksonville’s Solid Waste Division at (904) 387-8847. A list of items that will be accepted at this event is published at www.coj.net NEW dEMOLITION gUIdELINES IN pLACE New demolition guidelines have been put in place by the City’s Building Department effective immediately. The new guidelines are detailed in Bulletin 4-18 and go beyond state guidelines to better represent the density of most of the City’s neighborhoods. Bulletin 4-18 can be found on the City’s website (www.coab.us) under the Building Department information page. Please call the Building Department at 247-5826 if you notice dust or wind-borne debris crossing the property line of a demolition site, or if water hoses are not in use during demolition and loading. You have probably heard the phrase "If You See Something, Say Something". Across the country, this mantra has been used to encourage and empower citizens to report suspicious activity. Police often receive information after-the-fact – sometimes even via social media – regarding suspicious people or vehicles. As a result, often there is little that police can do to investigate. You know your neighborhood. If you see or hear anything that gives you pause, please call the Atlantic Beach Police Department’s non-emergency number and ask that an officer be dispatched. There is no call that is too silly or not important. We are here to serve our community and keep everyone safe. By being alert and reporting suspicious activity, you can protect your family, neighbors, and community. Please put the Atlantic Beach Police Department’s non-emergency phone number in your contact list now. It’s 247-5859. Michelle Cook, Police Chief City, National parks Service to hold workshop Jan. 16 The City of Atlantic Beach, with assistance from its residents and the National Park Service, is identifying priority needs of existing parks, future parks, multimodal connectivity, and other points of interests for the City’s Parks and Trails Master Plan. Citizen input on the master plan will be gathered through a series of community workshops and a public survey. The kickoff workshop will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at City Hall. Identical presentations will be given at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to summarize the goals and objectives of the project. The remaining workshop time will be an open format for citizens to interact with staff. Residents are encouraged to stop in, at their convenience, anytime during the workshop to share ideas. The City will schedule future design charrettes in to develop more detailed plans for priority areas. In 2019, a draft plan will be presented to the Environmental Stewardship Committee for a recommendation prior to finalizing the plan and presenting it to the City Commission for consideration.
