I have been a beaches resident for over 37 years, and a resident of Atlantic Beach for 32 years. All three of my kids were raised at the beaches and went to local public schools. I am an attorney by education and experience, although I now act only as an arbitrator or mediator. Throughout my life and career I have served my community in a variety of ways as a volunteer. I submitted my name for the vacancy when Commissioner Stinson resigned because I felt it was the right time to become more active in my community. I have learned a lot, but know there is a lot more to learn! Since I’ve come on board, big issues affecting us all have come before the Commission. Some issues have been decided (further discussion of annexation of a bloc of land west of Mayport will not be happening this year), while others are pending as more information is gathered. In the last letter, Commissioner Norris provided you with some of the ways to learn more and/or participate in the decision process. Now I’ll provide you with reasons why. In the coming year, the COAB and its committees will be discussing: options to improve our parks for more enjoyment by our citizens; parking issues in various places in AB (including installing some paid parking in crowded areas); strengthening our tree ordinance; improving our stretch of Mayport Road; the possibility of purchasing Johnston Island in partnership with the City of Jacksonville; stormwater management plans; and ways to take a leadership role in environmental concerns here at the beach. Of course the biggest item is always how to best utilize taxpayers’ money to improve our City for those who live here and those who come to visit: planning the budget for the following year. If it’s not in the budget, it will likely be at least another year before we spend money to do something you’d like to see done in Atlantic Beach. Your Commissioners are all trying to make the best decisions possible for all the people in Atlantic Beach. That can only happen when we are in possession of all pertinent information regarding the issues and how our citizens feel about them. Please contact us with any information or concerns you have about issues coming before us, so we are better informed. I look forward to hearing from you! Cindy HeLP PROTeCT OUR beACHeS In addition to Florida being a great place to enjoy the sun and surf, the state’s beaches are important nesting areas for sea turtles and the sand dunes are home to many unique plants and animals. The sand dunes along Atlantic Beach can be severely damaged by beachgoers who walk over the dunes and destroy the plants that are growing there. Dune vegetation (plants) like sea oats are very important. The roots and blades of these plants will help hold the sand in place and reduce the amount of dune erosion. Sea oats are able to withstand harsh salty and windy conditions, but they cannot survive a great deal of trampling. Florida State Statute 161.242, Harvesting of sea oats and sea grapes prohibited (2), states “It is unlawful for any purpose to cut, harvest, remove, or eradicate any of the grass commonly known as sea oats or Uniola paniculata and Coccolobis uvifera commonly known as sea grapes from any public land or from any private land without consent of the owner of such land or person having lawful possession thereof.” Although merely standing or walking on our dunes is not typically considered criminal, we do recognize that this is not ideal for healthy sea oats. Please do not hesitate to contact the Atlantic Beach Police Department at 247-5859 if you see anyone on our dunes and we will be happy to send an officer to speak to that person.
