STAFF REPORT
City of Atlantic Beach
Commission Meeting
AGENDA ITEM: Streetlights
DATE: April 1, 2002
SUBMITTED BY: David E. Thompson, Chief of Police/DPS
BACKGROUND:
At a previous City Commission Meeting, the Police Department was asked to review the
lighting on the main roadways, and to determine the additional streetlights that would be
required to assure a streetlight on every other utility pole.
The Police Department (Lt. Christman) reviewed the existing lighting on Serinole Road,
Sherry Drive, Ocean Blvd., East Coast Drive, Plaza Drive, Royal Palms Drive, and
Sailfish Drive. To assure a minimum. of one streetlight on every other utility pole, it will
require the addition oftwenty-two (22}lights to be added to existing poles. Please see
the attachment.
As noted on the attachment:
1. Royal Palms Drive is already in compliance.
2. Ocean Blvd. and East Coast Drive only need one (1) additional streetlight each
(keeping in mind that Ocean Blvd. Utility poles aze close together, and one light
per intersection appears to be sufficient).
3. Sherry Drive needs two (2) Streetlights.
4. Sailfish Drive needs an additional three (3) streetlights.
5. Plaza Drive needs six (6) streetlights.
6. Seminole Road needs an additional nine (9) Streetlights.
BUDGET: There will be no immediate cost for the addition oftwenty-two (22)
streetlights in the recommended locations. However, the ongoing cost will be
approximately $4.50 per month per streetlight. This amounts to approximately $1188 per
yeaz.
AGENDA ITEM #3B
APRIL 8, 2002
RECOMMENDATIONS: If the City Commission would like to have streetlights on the
main roadways to be at a minimum of one streetlight for every other utility pole, then the
Police Department can coordinate this effort with JEA.
