RESOLUTION N0.02-06
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH PETITIONING THE
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO LOWER THE
.SPEED LIMIT ON MAYPORT ROAD
WHEREAS, Atlantic Beach Police Department responded to 165 traffic crashes on the
section of Mayport Road that lies within the Atlantic Beach municipal boundazies, making
Mayport Road one of the most dangerous roads in the city; and
WHEREAS, there is a mixture of commercial and residential areas throughout the
Mayport corridor; and
WHEREAS, the opening of the Mayport Road flyover may improve traffic flow but may
also increase traffic speeds, making the conditions which aze already hazardous for pedestrians,
cyclists, and motorcyclists, even more dangerous; and
WHEREAS, vazious citizens and citizen groups have expressed their concerns for the
safety of vehicular, pedestrian and cycling traffic on Mayport Road; and
WHEREAS, it is the opinion of the Atlantic Beach City Commission that a lower speed
limit may help to reduce the number of crashes on Mayport Road and create a safer environment.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Atlantic Beach City Commission petitions
the Florida Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit on Mayport Road from the
current 45 mph to 35 mph in order to create a safer environment for both vehicles and
pedestrians.
This. Resolution shall take effect upon its fuial passage and adoption.
