02/1989 Atlantic Beach NewsAAttantic Beach News Volume 1 -**1 Editor: Daren Moore February 198' Welcome to the first edition of the Atlantic Beach News. This newsletter was a brainstorm from our department heads and our City Manager in the interest of the employees of Atlantic Beach. If you would like to contribute any news, please feel free to do so, just contact Karen Moore at City Hall. New Employees: Diane Howard has replaced Maureen King as Mr. Fellows Administrative Assistant. Diane comes to us from the University of North Florida. Welcome Diane, we're glad to have you!! Bill Searcy is our new employee at the Buccaneer Plant. Bill makes his home here in Atlantic Beach and can be seen most weekends throwing his frisbee on the beach. Welcome to Bill. a rj 4 For Your I nfor ation Parks & Recreation News: Recycling is the big topic at Russell Park according to Rose Blanchard, if you need more information about the way of the future, call her at 241-7431. "We have collected over $175.00 strictly for paper, for the months of November and December. None of these collection containers cost us a cent, so it's all clear profit!" proclaims Mrs. Blanchard. "AB", Parks & Recreation Foreman, is happy to have CYNTHIA WEATHERS as his assistant. They are a Great Twosome. They have "discovered" some very "interesting" items that indicate some of our citizenry are partaking in activities less than moral/legal. Hope you'll keep us informed Rose on those moral issuesH The City's DEMOLITION CREW WAS ACTIVELY ( and I mean activiel y) at work last geek. They further demolished the restrooms attached to the Concession Stand in Russell Park. The termites, etc. had done an excellent job at preparing the building for the DEMO CREW. Those vermin who occupied that building were the HEALTHIES we've ever seen. "I would have suggested a membership in WEIGHT 'CATCHERS AND/OR A SPA - if they had lived long enough!" according to Rose. Many thanks to the DEMOLITION CREW! for their help. Rose would highly recommend them to all!!!! Rose urges all departments to join in the Recycling Program the City is trying to foster. A parting word from P & R to all: MOST OF US CAN FORGIVE AND FORGET - WE JUST DON'T WANT THE OTHER PERSON TO FORGET THAT WE FORGAVE!! Thanks Rose for all your help in this first edition. Police Department: Welcome back to Pam Cody, one of the many fine dispatchers at the Police Station. We sure did miss you, Pam. Fire Department: Chief Rew reports that Sam Bass, Mike Salazar and Rick Murphy are attending an E.M.T. training course out at Mayport Naval Station. The course is given by Florida Junior College. Chief Rew also reports that Jay Smith is busy at Fire Inspectors School. The course will last 5 weeks afterwhich Jay will be our new Fire Inspector. Congratulations to all of our fireman for expanding their 7' A Atlantic Beach News February 1989 Page 2 knowledge. From the "hiss Scarlett, they know al of about birthin babies " file, Chief Rew, Jim Hill, Sam Bass, Tedd Smith, and Volunteers Phillip Nadeau and Dennis Herrman responded to a call January 9 at a home on Seminole Road, where they delivered a bouncing baby girl named Emily. Baptist Medical Centers' Life Flight flew out to take momma and baby to the hospital. This reporter was on the scene and noticed a smile the size of the State of Florida on Chief Rews face as he and his men came out of the home. Great job guys. Buccaneer Plant: Congratulations to Harry McNally who was elected Secretary/Treasurer of Florida dater Pollution Control Operators Association. Finance Department: We need to tip our hats to two fine girls who prepare our paychecks every other week. Carlene Matthews and Ellen LaVake don't get enough credit for the fine job they do for us. Thanks girls. City Clerk Department: I'd like to personally welcome Maureen King, our new City Clerk, to this department. Even though Maureen has been with the City for a number of years, she took over the vacancy made by Mrs. Tucker's retirement in November. Of course Mrs. Adelaide Tucker is still with us in the capcity of City Commissioner, however the candy supply has stopped in our department. Sorry guys, you needed to lose weight anyway!! And sometimes I accumulate trash through the morning and afternoon hours that I do not like to store overnight. I find the existing pickup schedule unacceptable, and I am starting a petition. To correct this problem, I recommend that the City of Atlantic Beach implement twice a day garbage service. This would solve the problem for me. If you do not like this idea, perhaps the City would consider a call-in trash pickup. A citizen could call "P -U Trash", and a sanitation employee would be dispatced to the house. Signed: I.M.
