Planning for the future is not an easy
task. Nonetheless, it is of critical importance,
and thankfully, our Atlantic Beach elected
officials agree.
During the next several weeks the
Mayor and City Commission will be working
with the City Manager to identify and priori-
tize goals for our community. The goal set-
ting sessions consist of a discussion process in
an informal environment away from the
Commission Chambers and will take approxi-
mately eight hours in total. The meetings are
open to the public as provided by Florida
law, but no actions will be taken.
With our growing and dynamic com-
munity, it is of the utmost importance to be
pro -active instead of reactive. Our Mayor
and City Commission members are to be
commended for their commitment to this
principal, for, as Peter Drucker stated, "long
range plan does not deal with future
decisions, but with the future of
present decisions."
We hope you enjoy this issue of the Atlantic
Beach Courier, and on behalf of the City Commis -
Sion and all the Atlantic Beach employees, we wish
°• "•• you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Vear!

This office takes great pride in an-
nouncing the appointment of John W. Weldon
to Commission Seat 3. His appointment was
made on November 12,1989. Mr. Weldon
fills the unexpired term of Alan C. Jensen who
stepped down in November to take on the
task of Atlantic Beach City Attorney. Mr.
Weldon served as Commissioner of our great
city back in the 60's. We welcome him back
and look forward to working with him.
The other members of our Commission
are: Mayor William I. Gulliford, Jr., Robert
Cook, Glenn Edwards and Adelaide Tucker.
The Mayor and Commissioners can be
reached at 249-2395.
Commission Meetings
Due to the Christmas Holidays there
will be only one Commission meeting in
December. The Commission meetings for
the next three months are as follows:
December 11
January 8 and 22
February 12 and 26
Meetings start promptly at 7:15 p.m.
Attendance at our meetings has gone up
and we welcome our citizens to come and be
a part of each meeting. Anyone wishing
information or actions by the Commission
may stop by the City Clerk's Office at City
Hall Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.
until 5:00 p.m.
The 1990 Census is just around the
corner and the U.S. Census Bureau is looking
for eager citizens of Atlantic Beach to help
conduct this very important task here in our
city. The Bureau will be hiring thousands of
temporary workers nationwide; hundreds in
our area alone. The qualifications required
are as follows: 18 yrs. of age or older, high
school graduate or equivalent, maintain an
extended period of walking, read small print
and hear normal conversational speech.. The
Bureau will pay a competitive salary and suc-
cessful completion of some assignments will
earn extra pay. Any interested citizen should
contact Harriett Ann Woodlief at 387-5923
immediately. What great pride it would be
to say you helped out the 1990 Census.
Anyone interested in being on a
Census Committee in Atlantic Beach may
contact Maureen King at 249-2395. The
committee will work to promote and inform
the public of the importance of the census.
Many state and federal grants are based on
population so Atlantic Beach is striving for
a 100% count.
The police department is responding
to recent traffic complaints by stepping up
its enforcement activities. Citizens are ad-
vised to adhere to the posted speed limits
throughout the city, and pay special attention
to the school zones. Also note that traffic on
Mayport Road must stop for school buses
whether northbound or southbound.
The police department welcomes
two new officers, Jamie Curry and Charles
Johnson. Both officers are experienced
patrolmen, and will certainly become assets
to the City of Atlantic Beach.
Neighborhood watch groups have
been organized in various locations around
the city, and these organizations have already
produced positive results. If you are inter-
ested in helping organize a neighborhood
watch group, please contact officer Victor
Raynor at the Police Department at 249-5606.
Lifeguard applications are being ac-
cepted for the summer of 1990. The city
will be paying more than $7.50/hour to hire
professional, mature, well-trained lifeguards.
Individuals must obtain a first responder
certification before the season, and

The City animal control officer, Bee Jay

from various neighborhoods about cats be-
coming a nuisance. Please ensure your pet's
safety through veterinary care and conformity
to the City's Ordinances.
The Fire Department recently received
a long awaited and much needed fire truck.
The new truck, a class "A" pumper, has a
much greater fire fighting capability than our

geared fire fighters, has on board foam
capabilities and is capable of pumping 1500
gallons of water per minute. The cab is big
enough to allow the fire fighters to suit up
while enroute to a fire which will save valu-
able time at the scene. Anyone interested in
viewing the new pumper may contact Chief
Walter Rew at 249-5606.
Parks and Recreation
Department
The big news for the month is the
Christmas Tree lighting celebration on
December 7,1989 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in
Jack Russell Park. All residents and their
families are cordially invited to attend. Bring
the children to visit with Santa. Enjoy the
music of the local school choruses, Mayport
Jr. High Band, a barbershop quartet, and the
special chorus of Friendship Baptist Church
and the Community Presbyterian Church.
Refreshments will be served by some very
special "neighbors."
Are you parents trying to figure out
what to do with the kids when they are out
of school for Christmas break and you
have to work? The YMCA will conduct a
Christmas Camp from December 18Z22 and
December 26-29 at Jack Russell Park. Now
that the modular building is in place and
in order, the children will have a place to
go if the weather gets out of hand. The
fees are $40.00 for one week and $75.00 for
two weeks. For more information, contact
Rose Blanchard at 241-7431 or the YMCA
at 744-2233.
40 Beginning December 4,1989, the rec-
reation department will afford the children
of Atlantic Beach a chance to write a letter to
Santa! There will be a place in the modular
building in Jack Russell Park to deposit your
letter. Santa told Mrs. Rose that he will
come by over the weekends to pick up the
letters. if the boys and girls are working
hard at being good, he will leave thein a
treat. Mom and Dad can bring the boy/girl
to the modular the week after the letter is
delivered - if there is no letter, that means
Santa left a treat!
40 Mrs. Rose would like to inform the
parents that the P. & R. Department has an
unofficial "Toddler Club" (those toddlers who
frequently visit the park). This club will
provide a jr. basketball goal (portable) that
the parents may borrow for the children to
play with while they are here. We also have
some other toys that you may use while in the
park. Just come by the modular and we will
sign these items out to you. All we ask is the
return of the borrowed items for others to use.
Parents, please check the bulletin
board in front of the modular for information
and schedules. We feature some very special
events for the adults as well as the children
on this notice board.
Mrs.Rose and her department wish
all of the children and their families a super
Christmas and a Blessed New Year.
