Areas where collapsed or leaking r sewer mains are causing potholes are targeted for point repairs or .. replacement or rehabilitation of the mains. y We plan to increase the capacity of the Atlantic 0 Beach and Buccaneer sewer plants in order to provide adequate capacity for all current and future customers and to comply with requirements from the State and Federal Governments. Our Atlantic Beach Water Plants are being upgraded to current Federal Department of Environmental Regulation and Health & Rehabilitative Services requirements and the project should be complete by May 1993. The plants are located on 11th Street at the Water Tower and on Mayport Road immediately north of Fairway Villas. STREETS AND DRAINAGE We are currently preparing plans to provide drainage and/or roadway improvements to Church Street east of Mayport Road and Park Street near Donner Park. Other streets are being reviewed in accordance with a priority list of streets to be resurfaced and/or reconstructed versus the available funds for paving. I: 1401100101 The committee is proud of the success of the "Atlantic Arborfest" tree sale held on January 23, even though poor weather forced it to take place a week later than originally planned. Our thanks to the participating nurseries, the generous contribution by Publix of coffee and "goodies" and to the students of Atlantic Rearh F1 p.m zThn gave of their time and talent to assist the volunteers during the event. Every building, place of residence, or place of business in the city which fronts on any public street is required to have a street number permanently attached to the outside of the building in a conspicuous place easily visible from the street upon which the building faces. For your safety our Police and Fire Departments request that residents and business owners make sure their street numbers are visible and not obscured by shrubbery. If you do not have a street number on your builds ng, pllcasc plan to corrc ct iliia as SUUiI aJ possible. This will assist our public safety departments in responding quickly to emergency calls. .tn JZern0rl¢rn Jasper "AB" Lewis, a ten year employee of this city, in the capacity of General Maintenance Worker, and later Crew Chief, passed away on January 6, 1993. "AB" had worked in the Parks and Recreation Department since it was formed in 1986. He was always concerned about the safety of the children and was proud of how "his" parks were groomed. A HUMBLE, FAITHFUL, GENTLE GIANT, WHO IS SORELY MISSED AND PROUDLYREMEMBERED YOUR TAG IS YOUR PET'S TICKET HOME UNLEASHED IS UNLOVED ABUSE IT, LOSE IT Those are the mottos of your Animal Control Officer, BeeJay Lester. Almost 400 animals, most of which had no tags, were sent to Jacksonville Animal Control during 1992 by BeeJay. Too many pets either do not have or do not wear their rabies or city pet tags. If your dog or cat is picked up by the animal control officer or a resident, you are almost assured of getting it back if it is wearing a tag since owners can usually be located through pet license information at the police station, which is open twenty-four hours a day. If you really love your pet, do not allow it to roam unleashed. The animal not only may get killed or injured, it could be stolen, catch diseases, bite someone (and get quarantined), and if it is taken to the city's holding facility, owners must pay a fine to redeem their pet. In Atlantic Beach pet owners still enjoy the privilege of taking their pets to the beach. If you abuse your animal control ordinance, you could lost this privilege. Be a responsible pet owner and remember the BIG FOUR: Vaccinate, Tag, Leash, and Scoop. MESSAGE TO CAT OWNERS: The animal ordinance regarding vaccinations and tags applies equally to cats as well as dogs. Also, your cat is not to become a nuisance by damaging property or disturbing y y neighbors. If you feed stray felines, } then you must assume ownership and get them tagged. There have been numerous complaints of cats that have gone "feral" or wild. A resident was recently bitten by one such stray while trying to get the cat out of her garage. Catching such strays is difficult but if not caught and found to be free from rabies, bite victims may have to take a course of rabies shots. 9 • The Recreation Department is anxious to meet the needs of our citizens so if you have any suggestions that will help us serve you better, we would love to hear from you.
