Exh 2AAGENDA ITEM #2A FEBRUARY 12, 2001 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Law Enforcement and Buckle Up Florida aze forging broad, community-based partnerships across the state to increase the proper use of seat belts and child safety seats to ninety percent by 2005, thereby saving our community precious lives and taxpayer dollars; and WHEREAS, February 10-18, 2001 has been declared National Child Passenger Safety Week and the kick-off of the Buckle Up Florida campaign; and WHEREAS, increasing seat belt. and child safety seat uses is still the single most effective way to sane lives and reduce injuries in crashes on Florida roadways; and WHEREAS, research shows that adults who do not buckle up aze sending children a deadly message that it is alright not to weaz a seat belt, because children mirror adult behavior; and WHEREAS, studies. consistently show that the best way to get children buckled up is to get adults buckled up. NOW, THEREFORE, I, John S. Meserve, Mayor of the City of Atlantic Beach, do hereby proclaim our support for National Child Passenger Safety Week and Buckle Up Florida, and urge everyone to help reduce tragic loss of life on our highways by buckling up every child in an approved restraint in the vehicle's back seat. It is time to make unbuckled children and adults unacceptable in Florida through the strong adult and child passenger safety laws and highly visible enforcement of these laws. I call upon all citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses; and schools in Atlantic Beach to observe this week with appropriate cezemonies.
