Authority.
RESILIEnCY, SYnERGY -- And YOU!
It is summertime in Atlantic Beach, and I hope your season is feeling just right.
Please know that my fellow commissioners and I appreciate hearing from you
-- via official email, by telephone, at public meetings, or in-person.
Last month, you received an update on stormwater and flood mitigation
projects in Atlantic Beach. This month, I’d like to emphasize two conditions
that our planning efforts absolutely require: resiliency and synergy. I use these
words a lot in the context of water.
Resiliency is the capacity to adapt to environmental challenges through
commitment, innovation, and planning. Synergy is the condition that results
when two or more forces combine to produce an effect greater than the sum
of the separate forces.
How do we achieve greater resiliency in the face of flooding and sea level rise?
We do it in myriad actions designed to serve you -- like dune renourishment,
tree plantings, septic to sewer conversions, onsite stormwater retention, smart
building codes, infrastructure improvements, and a capital improvement
plan. We have been proactive by using a Florida Resilient Coastlines grant to
complete a vulnerability assessment and adaptation plan.
How does synergy relate to stormwater management? We must work together
to educate and partner for the long term. It starts with engaging you in public
meetings to hear your input, share information, and develop best practices. It
grows through relationships fostered with government partners, including our sister
beach cities, the City of Jacksonville, and our state and federal legislators. It thrives
when our talented staff works with consultants and others to develop smart plans.
Coastal resiliency is a top priority, but we are hard at work on other projects! In recent
months, you have probably noticed work in our parks, on our streets, and on crossings
and sidewalks. You’ve been patient with the parking challenges that come every year
with the influx of visitors to the beach and Beaches Town Center. You’re hearing us talk
about the need for smarter and better recycling. Thank you, everyone, for all you do
to embrace and improve our special quality of life.
If you have read this far, I am asking you to send me a quick email at eglasser@
coab.us with a short message about an issue that is on your mind this month. I can’t
wait to hear from you!
As always, it is my great honor to serve you. Enjoy your summer and stay cool.
In Gratitude,
Ellen Glasser
