Dear Atlantic Beach neighbors,
I hope this isn’t the first time you’re hearing me spread the word about the problem of plastic waste. Reports estimate that up to 13
million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean … each year. At minimum, 800 species are affected by this trash that makes up 80% of marine debris. As a coastal city, we’re on the front lines.
Plastic takes centuries to fully break down, but during that process it attracts and sheds an array of chemicals (some of which are
toxic), and it crumbles into tiny pieces – so-called microplastics. These
diminutive debris are showing up in drinking water, beer, table salt, and more. Unfortunately, the effects of these substances upon human
health are unknown, as it is still being studied.
Beyond the impacts to individuals, the social cost of this pollution
is also under review. A study published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin
suggests a $2.5 trillion cost to society each year. The study took into account negative affects on recreational activities, fisheries, and more.
With the threat and cost to personal wellbeing, wildlife, environment,
recreation, and livelihood, it should be understandable why many in our beach city are in a state of alarm.
So how do we stop this? It’s a multi-faceted issue with no easy answer. Some have suggested pushing for voluntary change from citizens,
businesses, and manufacturers. Unfortunately, while preferable, it’s not
enforceable or expeditious. That being said, any proposed legislation by local cities will be limited in scope, only affecting those further down the supply
chain as opposed to plastic manufacturers, the originators of the material.
I invite you to participate in the conversation. From businesses owners, I’d love to hear about the barriers you’re facing, what you’re doing,
if you’ve made changes, etc. For individual citizens, please let me know where you stand on this issue.
My email is bnorris@coab.us. I look forward to hearing from you!

SEA & SKY AiRShOW October 26-27, 2019Jacksonville Beach Oceanfront11 am to 4 pm each day
Get ready to go full-throttle, because this will not be your typical day at the
beach. On Oct. 26 and 27, the skies and waterways of the First Coast are transformed into the backdrop for the most exciting air acts and military
demonstrations in the world! This action-packed event will feature a dynamic
over-the-ocean sky show highlighted by the world-famous United States Navy Blue Angels along with other top military and civilian flight teams. Bring the
family out for a weekend of live entertainment, a street festival featuring
static displays of aircraft and military vehicles, simulators, recruitment booths, a kids’ area, and more. Info: www.jaxhappenings.com.
You have probably heard
the phrase "If You See Something, Say Something".
Across the country, this
mantra has been used to encourage and empower
citizens to report suspicious
activity. Police often receive
information after-the-
fact – sometimes even via social media – regarding
suspicious people or
vehicles. As a result, often there is little that police can do to investigate.
You know your neighborhood. If you see or hear anything that gives you
pause, please call the Atlantic Beach Police Department’s non-emergency number and ask that an officer be dispatched. There is no call that is too silly or not important. We are here to serve our community and keep everyone
safe. By being alert and reporting suspicious activity, you can protect your family, neighbors, and community. Please put the Atlantic Beach Police Department’s non-emergency phone
number in your contact list now. It’s 247-5859.
