AGENDA ITEM: Extension of Annual Contract for Chlorine and Sulfur Dioxide

BACKGROUND: On June 23, 1999 bids were opened for the annual contract for chlorine and sulfur
dioxide. The City Commission awazded the contract to the low responsive bidder, Jones Chemicals, Inc.
for the following amounts:
Chlorine, 1-ton container, each $279.00
Chlorine,1501b. Cylinder, each $ 36.50
Sulfur Dioxide, 1-ton container, each $385.00
Chlorine is used at the water and wastewater treatment facilities as a disinfectant. Sulfur Dioxide is used to
dechlorinate treated effluent at the city's wastewater treatment plants.
City staff has spoken to Jones Chemicals regazding an extension of their current contract for one year at
the current rates and they have agreed. Staff has been pleased with the performance of this contractor. As
per Bid No. 9899-24, the City reserves the right to renew the contract for two additional one-yeaz periods
pending a mutual agreement between the City and the Contractor, and a review. of the contract performance
by Contractor for the previous year.
BUDGET: Chlorine and sulfur dioxide aze budgeted as part of the operating supply account in the
Water and Sewer Utility funds in the amount of approximately $52,000.
RECOMMENDATION: Extend the contract with Jones Chemicals, Inc., per Bid No. 9899-24, for
chlorine and sulfur dioxide for one additional yeaz.
ATTACHMENTS: Letter from Jones Chemicals, Inc., dated June 18, 2001, agreeing to extend the
contract at current prices for one additional yeaz.
