The AB Environmental Stewardship Committee (ESC) was established in 2017
to study and make recommendations to the City on our maritime forest, parks and open spaces, beautification of public and private spaces, and care for our
environment. The 11-member ESC consists of residents from various back-
grounds with a keen interest in preserving and enhancing the community’s natural assets. Here is a scorecard of sorts of ESC-stimulated achievements
so far:
• LEED Silver-certified community designation earned
• coastal vulnerability assessment completed
• parks master plan initiated
• public art, façade and landscape grant program instituted
• Tree City USA designation reinstated
• heritage tree designated in a city park
• community Arbor Day celebrations established
• recycling bins placed at beach accesses and in parks
• beach litter basket program
• paperless utility billing
a LeeD cerTIFIeD cOmmunITy. This year, the ESC spearheaded making
Atlantic Beach the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) Silver-certified city in Florida. LEED gives cities the tools to measure and track outcomes and be evaluated based on key metrics that include
energy, water, waste, transportation, education, health, safety, prosperity and
equitability.
PracTIcInG enVIrOnmenTaL STeWarDShIP. Protecting the beach, dunes, marshlands and wetlands is critical in defending the island from
hurricanes, erosion and flooding. The ESC seeks to ensure that the City has
a viable stormwater management system, considers current research about sea level change, and enforces rules on dumping, septic tanks, commercial
pollution, and more. Also, the ESC actively supports the nonprofit Beaches
Go Green’s initiatives to provide awareness and education around single-use plastic pollution, recycling right, and creating less waste.
SuPPOrTInG The marITIme FOreST. The ESC is a steward of the tree canopy through advocacy, assessment, maintenance, planting and
preservation. Educating about our Tree City USA designation and promoting
the planting and care of trees to property owners, developers, builders, and contractors protects this natural resource. The ESC also monitors the
enforcement of the City’s tree ordinance to help protect our existing canopy
and has been instrumental in the planting of more than 200 trees throughout the city in 2019.

There will be no garbage pickup on December 25; routes are pushed back
by one day that week. If your normal service day is Wednesday, you will
be serviced on Thursday. If your normal service is on Thursday, you will be serviced on Friday; and so on. There will be no schedule changes for New
Year’s Day.

The Police Department would like to wish the Atlantic Beach community a
safe and peaceful holiday season. Thefts can become more frequent during the holiday season, partly because of increased opportunity. Whether you are
staying home or leaving town, we hope you will keep these safety tips in
mind:
#1 SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING – Be proactive and call the Police
Department to report suspicious persons or activity. Be prepared to tell us “where, what, who, when and how” by dialing 247-5859 or 911, or
by communicating via the SaferWatch app (visit www.SaferWatch.com/
AtlanticBeach for info).
#2 KEEP THINGS OUT OF SIGHT – Close your garage door and window blinds. Put valuables inside drawers or cupboards, out of view.
#3 LOCK UP! – Always secure doors and windows -- on your car and home.

Are you a veteran who lives in Atlantic Beach, or do you know a veteran who
lives in Atlantic Beach? Please tell us about him or her (or yourself) in 100 words or less (and include branch of service, length of tenure) and send a
picture (military-era preferred), and are honoring our veterans on the web
page www.coab.us/veterans. This is an ongoing project; we will update the page along the way. Please include the veteran’s address, so that we can
verify that the address is in Atlantic Beach. We will not publish the address.
To share your AB❤Veterans submission, email info@coab.us. Email or call
(904-247-5804) for more information.
enhancInG Our ParKS. The Environmental Stewardship Committee helps protect and expand our 14 AB parks, improving access to and amenities
for the parks including disability accommodations, bike paths, parking, and
signage. It works to maintain a web-based, publicly accessible inventory of parks including their description, history, and archaeological value.
InSPIrInG The beauTy OF The cITy. The ESC focuses on enhancing public rights of way, City buildings, and beach accesses with art, landscape
design and plantings. It advocates for reducing the number of degraded or
blighted properties and seeks to develop standards for signage, bus shelters, lighting and other elements of the built environment.
To share ideas with the ESC, or to get more information, call 247-5841 or
email trees@coab.us.

for others.
