#WeAreAB
The older I get, the faster time seems to fly. Two years in
office have flown by, so I wax sentimental this month
about valuing our coastal life, forming relationships, and
building community.
You’ll recall that we endured Hurricane Matthew in 2016,
and we were fortunate to get a large-scale beach
renourishment. That was eerily just before Hurricane Irma
hit us in 2017 and decimated our dunes.
After I took office, we were fortunate to have the support
of the city of Jacksonville, along with our state and
federal partners, a second time in two years and this time
for a full beach and dune renourishment.
Understanding the importance of coastal resiliency, we do
not minimize the value of coastal hardening efforts that
protect our lives, property, and quality of life.
Of course, other communities face similar challenges. In
government - here and everywhere - we are always on
watch for Mother Nature. In 2018, I engaged on Facebook
to the good folks in Atlantic Beach, N.C., after they lost part
of their Oceanana Pier and suffered other damage from
Hurricane Florence. I shared the image (to the right of this
column) of an original painting by acclaimed local artist
Gary Mack (with his permission). Since then, I have formed
a relationship with that city’s mayor, Trace Cooper, to share
our concerns and support, as we have both faced hurricane
and storm threats. Just a few months ago, we stayed in
touch as monster Hurricane Dorian battered the Bahamas
and pressed along the Eastern seaboard.
In the spirit of fostering relationships and community, I
recently issued a proclamation to recognize Atlantic Beach,
N.C., as our unofficial “Sister City.” Over the holidays, I
traveled there to present the proclamation, along with an
original of this inspirational painting that was
commissioned and gifted to us for this purpose. I was also
honored to swear Mayor Cooper in for an additional term.
In closing, our Commission will convene this month for an
annual visioning session and to set our priorities for 2020.
Your input and feedback is welcomed and encouraged. The
City’s priorities are published at www.coab.us/priorities.
It is my wish that you have a very Happy New Year. As
always, it is my great honor to serve you in our precious
city.
In Gratitude,
Ellen Glasser

THANK YOU, AB!
The City of Atlantic Beach wishes to thank
AB residents and the entire Beaches
community for making the Holiday Toy
Drive for local children a tremendous
success.
Because of your caring, generous hearts,
dozens of children were matched with
“angels”.

MARATHON COMING
FEBRUARY 9
The annual DONNA Marathon is Sunday, Feb. 9.
Runners love our community because of all of our
spirited supporters and curb crews who come out and
cheer them on as they complete their journey to the
finish line.
The marathon route will be the same as last year, with
the entire half marathon (and first half of the full
marathon) being run in Atlantic Beach. As a result,
access in Atlantic Beach may be inhibited for up to
seven hours beginning at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
Please take note of these traffic impacts in Atlantic
Beach and call the race headquarters at 355-PINK
with any problems or concerns you may have:

from noon Friday, Feb. 7, to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9.
· Vehicles will be prohibited from parking on
impacted streets after 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8.
· Atlantic Boulevard, westbound from Third Street
(A1A) to Royal Palms Drive, will be closed from 7 a.m.
to 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 9.
· Please ensure that all dogs are secured and not
able to run off of your property into the race route.
