AGENDA ITEM1I: Donation of Bicycles
DATE: December 3, 2001
SU8~11TTED eY: David E. Thompson, Chief of Police/DPS
BACKGROUND: The Police Department picks up abandoned bicycles on a frequent
basis. The bicycles are stored in a building at Public Works until
the owner is identified, or until it is clear that the owner will
probably not be identified. After ninety (90) days, the City Code
and the State Law allow the Police Department to dispose of the
bicycles.
The City Code allows abandoned property to be converted to
government use or to be sold. I Iowever, in the past, the City
Commission has approved the donation of abandoned bicycles to
charitable organizations.
There are several organizations collecting bicycles at this time for
distribution to underprivileged children for Christmas. The Police
Department has approximately 50-60 bicycles that are in
reasonably good condition, and they can be donated to one or more
of these charitable organizations.
