SUBMITTED BY: Susan Dunham, Beautification Coordinator DATE: February 14, 2000 BACKGROUND: The Beautification Committee would like to proclaim March 11, 2000 as Arbor Day for the City of Atlantic Beach. This proclamation will assist the Beautification Committee in its application for Tree City USA designation. To celebrate Arbor Day, the Beautification Committee and Greenscape are co-sponsoring The Beaches Tree Sale on March 11, 2000, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event will beheld in the parking lot located at 725 Atlantic Boulevard (Pic N-Save). Greenscape will have 2500 tree and plant species for sale to the public at near wholesale prices ($7 to $50). The selected species are drought resistant, salt tolerant and well suited for the beaches area. RECOMMENDATION: The Beautification Department recommends designating March 11, 2000 as Arbor Day for the City of Atlantic Beach. REVIEWED BY CITY MANAGE Proclamation _ WHEREAS, the celebration of Arbor Day was first observed in 1872 with the planting of more than a million trees in the State of Nebraska, and WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now an annual celebration throughout the nation and the world, and WHEREAS, trees can reduce erosion of our precious soil, clean the air, moderate the temperature, reduce our heating and cooling costs, and provide habitat for our wildlife, and WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, building material and fuel, and providing countless products made of wood, and WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of our businesses and serve to beautify our community, and WHEREAS, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and a symbol of renewal, NOW, THEREFORE, I, John Meserve, Mayor of the City of Atlantic Beach, do hereby proclaim March 11, 2000, as ARBOR DAY in the City of Atlantic Beach and urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and Further, I urge all citizens to plant trees for the beauty and well being of this and future generations.
