Fire/Rescue Update
Since the contract with Jacksonville was. approved for the provision of Fire and
Rescue Services, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department has kept records
on all calls for service in Atlantic Beach and the surrounding communities
which are served by Atlantic Beach Station #55. Jacksonville is providing
monthly reports on a timely basis, and Atlantic Beach staff has the necessary
maps to interpret the data and monitor service to Atlantic Beach.
It is difficult to make comparisons with previous Atlantic Beach Fire
Department reports prior to the contract. The previous Atlantic Beach reports
did not cover the territory that Station #55 currently serves, and the response
times were measured differently from the Jacksonville response times.
However, when comparing the response times, measured with the same criteria,
it appears as though the response times have continued to be acceptable and
consistent with past responses.
Jacksonville measures the response time of every call, and they measure from
the time the call was received, to the time a unit arrived on the scene. They
track the response time according to zones. With this tracking system, staff can
review the average response times to specific areas of Atlantic Beach, Neptune
Beach, and areas of Jacksonville served by Station #55. Although average
response times may rise and fall, the specific responses in Atlantic Beach are
typically much lower than the average for the station.
Complaints have been few, and when they have arisen, staff has investigated
them thoroughly. Jacksonville officials have also been very cooperative in
-- providing information when questions have been asked relative to their
operations. -
The attachment shows the total numbers of calls for service each month, and it
provides the average response times from the time the call was received to the
time a unit amved on the scene.
At this time, the contract appears to be working well. Jacksonville is providing
Advanced Life Support service as well as fire suppression and inspection
services, and their response times are being maintained at an acceptable level.
