RE: Diseased Medjool Palm (Ganodenna zonatum)
Dear Ms. Koechlin:
I have been asked to inform you that a member of the City of Atlantic Beach Public Works
maintenance crew has potentially identified a serious disease, Ganoderma zonatum, afflicting a
Medjool Palm located on the property at 276 Ocean Boulevard. I have enclosed photos taken by
staff to help you identify the tree. Please ignore the date/time stamp on the photos as it is incorrect.
For your information, I have enclosed an informational factsheet, "Ganoderma Butt Rot of Palms'
published by the University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Department of
Plant Pathology. In summary, Ganoderma is a fungus which causes the degradation of the lower
portion of the palm trunk and results in the formation of conks on the trunk. These conks release
spores that may spread the disease to other nearby palms. Because, there is no known preventative
or curative treatment for this disease, it is highly recommended that infected trees be removed as
soon as possible.
As you know, there are a number of palms located in close vicinity to your property, including the
historic colonnades of palms located along Ocean Boulevard and East Coast Drive, as well as the
numerous palms located in Town Center, which could potentially be impacted by the spread of this
disease. Thus, I have been asked to encourage you to consider removal of this particular palm
before the fungus spreads.
