Public Utilities Water - 2021Water Utility Fund Purpose: The Water Production and Water Distribution Divisions operate and maintain four water treatment plants, nine potable water wells, and the distribution system to supply potable water and fire protection. Key Objectives: To protect the public health through compliance with local, state and federal regulatory requirements for drinking water standards To maintain water supply and facilities to provide fire protection To insure adequate quantity and quality of future water supplies throughout the service area through proper maintenance and planning To protect existing water facilities through accurate system mapping and data entry into the GIS system To operate and maintain the system as efficiently as possible to ensure the rates paid by our customers remain some of the lowest in the region. Issues, Trends and Highlights: Over the last several years, water consumption dropped off fairly dramatically. A combination of factors, including conservation, the economic downturn, vacant apartments and mobile home parks, installation of private wells and retrofitting homes with water conserving plumbing fixtures may have accounted for the decreased water use. With the new planned subdivisions, consumption should begin to increase. The St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) continues to work on the Water Supply Plan and Minimum Flows and Levels (MFLs). The plan may show Northeast Florida area as a potential Priority Water Caution Area with possible limits on withdrawals from the Floridan Aquifer. In addition, the SJRWMD may require cost participation from all utilities to pay for regional projects that will meet the MFL requirements. The City will continue working with other utilities and the District to determine potential effects on water supply allocations and costs and protect the City’s interests.
