WHEREAS, to address the explosive growth in parts of this community, Jacksonville Mayor
John Delaney has announced a $300 million Preservation Project to enhance parks, purchase land
for conservation, and improve access to our natural assets; and
WHEREAS, the implementation of this project will control growth by removing
approximately 10% of the remaining developable land in Duval County and will help develop
ecotourism in the area; aril
WHEREAS, Mayor Delaney has proposed funding which is both innovative and far-
reaching for this project, which will include funds from various sources, including local, state, federal
and private sources; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Delaney is enlisting the help of the Duval County's Congressional
Delegation, especially Congresswomen Tillie Fowler and Corrine Brown, and Florida's senators in
securing a total of $28 million in federal funding to expand and improve public access to the
Timuquan Preserve; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Delaney is seeking a total of $25 million over five years as a result of
the recent American Heritage Rivers designation for the St. Johns River to purchase waterfront land,
increase the public's access to the rive and improve water quality.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the City Commission of the City of Atlantic
Beach salutes Mayor Delaney and commends him for his vision in sponsoring the largest, most
ambitious park and river access project in the history of Jacksonville, which will improve the quality
of life for the citizens of Duval County.
