AGENDA ITEM: Change Order for Lifeguard Station
DATE: May 19, 1999
SUBMITTED BY: David E. Thompson, City Manager
BACKGROUND: Please see the attachment from Pete Dowling. Mr. Dowling felt
that the proposed upstairs door for the lifeguard building was not
adequate. Considering the exposure of the door to the weather, he
felt that the door should be a marine hatch door that would not
leak. As you may note in his letter, he made the commitment to
. purchase and install the door without prior City approval.
It is the opinion of staff that this upgrade will protect the building
and eliminate the replacement of an inexpensive wooden door in
- the near future. The installation of this door is a reasonable
investment for the City and should be funded appropriately.
RECOMMENDATION: We recommend that the City Commission approve the change
order in the amount of $1,663 as per the attached request from
Dowling Construction.

Re: ATLANTIC BEACH LIFEGUARD BUILDING
Dear Mayor and Commissioners:
Specifications for the Observation Deck(roo fl exterior call for a painted wood door.
Considering the door's unprotected exposure to wind and water, I highly recommend that you approve
an upgrade to a watertight system such as the one depicted in the attachment.
Considering that we were in the eleventh hour of our schedule to complete the building and
faced with a decision to purchase this door at a considerable discount before it was sold to someone else,
I acquired it last week and installed it this past Saturday.
I apologize for this "retroactive" request and realize that my actions do not preclude you from
disapproving a Change Order for same. I feel confident, however, that you will agree with the reason
for my decision and ask for you support by approving a Change Order for 5 1,663.
