Exh 8C-. AGENDA ITEM NO: DATE: ~o " z~-' 99 CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH CITY COMMISSION MEETING STAFF REPORT AGENDA ITEM: SUBMITTED BY: DATE: Maintenance of Atlantic Blvd. Medians d~°~ Robert S: Kosoy, Director of Public Works ~~~ June 23, 1999 BACKGROUND: Since the original planting of the palm trees, grass and shrubs and installation of the sprinkler system we have hired two companies to perform the annual maintenance contract. First, from May 1, 1997 to Apri130, 1998 Aloha Services did not maintain the lantana or weed-eat effectively and prompted a rebid of the work. From May 1, 1998 to July 31, 1998 City Staff tried to maintain the medians the best they could, however no pest control was done at this time. Next, Arlington Rivers Lawn Care received the new bid on August 1, 1998 and have improved but have lost most of the lantana that was in fair to poor condition. Their pest control subcontractor, Nader's Pest Raiders, has not controlled the leaf miners that continue to cause some of the lantana to die. The contractor has been advised of the problem and has been working on it for the last six weeks. On June 22, 1999 Mr. Kelly Elmore, RLA from Euthenics Studio, advised that he has received monies from Greenscape to replace all of the dead lantana and some Indian Hawthorne and can cut down the dead palm in front of Publix. B&L Landscaping can do this work before the July 4`h weekend. He further advised that if a replacement palm is desired, a cost of approximately $4,000 should be budgeted by the City of Atlantic Beach. This cost will cover the cost of the new palm and the crane rental to remove the old root ball and plant the new palm. RECOMMENDATION: If desired, the City Commission may appropriate funding of $4,000 to replant a new palm tree to replace the extra palm tree we received.
