Below is a recap of activities in the Department for the month of July 1999:
A. Summary of Donner Park Activities:
- On July 19, the Jacksonville Dental Van visited Donner Park Community Center to
perform cleanings and sealants for the children. The Dental Van will return August 10~' to
do fillings and extractions.
- We attended The City of Jacksonville "Come Together" day at Metropolitan Park. The
children also visited Hannah Park-Water Park, Blades Skate Center and traveled via city
bus to Fletcher Pool.
- The scientific research group Mad Science visited Donner Park to perform a variety of
mini-workshops on various elementary school science experiments. Also the children
were able to do hands-on activities with the Mad Science Staffmembers.
- The Summer Camp "Read to Succeed" program will reward a bicycle a each to a boy and
a girl who reads the most books in one summer camp session.
> For the entire month of July, Members of Operation Out Reach prepared lunches every
Friday for the children at the Summer Camp.
- The children attended a cheerleadinglfootball camp. The camp was hosted by Patrick
Sapp and Raheem Abdual of Fletcher High School Varsity Football Team. The children
were sponsored by the Jacksonville Department of Housing and Urban Development.
B. Summary of Jordan Park activities:
- The Jordan Park summer camp begin the month of July working on basketball skills.
Teaching the kids all the aspects of basketball (refereeing, dribbling, passing, rebounding,
shooting, offensive and defensive plays/sets).
> We educated the kids on how important it is to drink water while working out.
- The end of the month we moved to football. Same as basketball, we taught the kids all
the aspects of football, from pop warner to flag football.
- Field Trips: Traveled to Donner Park to referee some games and for a fun day. We
also went to the pool and Blades Skating Complex.
C. Summary of activities coordinated by the Parks & Recreation Department.
- Completed Art/Pottery Classes. An Art Show is scheduled on August 13 to showcase the
children's projects in which the parents will attend.
- Prepared minutes and agenda for the Recreation Board.
- Attended six after 4:00 PM meetings for a total of thirty (35) hours which included:
- City Commission and Recreation Board.
- Overseeing the Construction of the Tresca Property.
- Received bids on Bull Park Renovations.
- Begin coordinating the flag football season.
- Worked on the budget.
- Other activities included daily meetings, reports, telephone calls, park inspections, and etc.
