Exh 8DG ~~ O i ~ 0 C AGENDA ITEM: DATE: SUBMITTED BY: CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH CITY COMMISSION STAFF REPORT Sale of Surplus Fire Trucks August 5, 1999 David E. Thompson, City Manager BACKGROUND: The contract with Jacksonville to provide fire service in our City left the City of Atlantic Beach with two (2) fire trucks. One truck has some good life left in it, and it should bring a substantial price in its current condition. The other truck is older, and we do not know how much it will be worth on the open market. Staff is recommending that we sell the fire trucks while they are still in good condition. In reviewing the various options for selling surplus equipment, staff does not believe that the City is going to obtain the best prices by auctioning the truck or selling it through its own sources. Negotiations with a neighboring City clearly demonstrated that Atlantic Beach is not going to obtain the value for the equipment if Atlantic Beach tries to sell the equipment without outside help. In discussions with Fire Equipment Companies, staff found one company, Hall-Mark Fire Equipment, Inc., that will sell the truck for ten percent (10%) of the sales price. They have connections and sources to sell used equipment, and they believe that they can get a good price for the trucks. The purpose of this staff report is to recommend that the City Commission declare the Fire Trucks as surplus property so that staff can attempt to sell the trucks. Additionally, it is recommended that the Commission authorize staff to contract with Hall-Mark Fire Equipment, Inc. to help sell the trucks. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Commission declare the fire trucks as surplus property, and authorize staff to contract with Hall-Mark Fire Equipment, Inc. to sell it.
