384 1st Street 15-DRTV-1045 Mitigation Letter---------- euthenics TREE MITIGATION LETTER Subject Property: 384 First Street -Marco Residence, Atlantic Beach, Florida Subject: Tree Removal Validation 33" Laurel Oak, 15" Laurel Oak -(Quercus laurifolia) Reason for Removal: 33" Laurel Oak -This tree was removed at the request of the project Landscape Architect due to noticeable limb tip dieback (an outlier sign of tree senescence), weeping, stained areas on the trunk bark and branch crotch areas in addition to overall tree health. This size of Laurel Oak is indicative of a mature tree. The Laurel Oak typically lives about 50 -70 years and shows numerous signs at this age of decline. Mature Laurel Oaks are unpredictable at this age of their ability to withstand wind and present a considerable hazard when their massive trunks and/or limbs come crashing down. This tree was consistent in its appearance in this regard and was subsequently removed based on its age, condition and threat to new construction and adjacent residences. 15" Laurel Oak -This tree was initially slated to remain given its age and health condition as the tree expressed no outward signs of senescence. In early October of 2016, Hurricane Matthew skirted the coast of north Florida bringing significant wind gusts which split the branch crotch about 25' up rendering the tree a useless pole in appearance. It was subsequently removed for appearance sake and the fact that there were no more limbs on the tree. Laurel Oaks have an inherently weak tree grain structure making them vulnerable in wind events. These trees were removed due to health or storm damage and in this Landscape Architect opinion does not qualify for mitigation. Two (2) 6" caliper Live Oaks (Quercus virginiana) were planted in the front yard of the subject property and seem to have adapted and stabilized well. They have an automatic bubbler system to provide irrigation water to insure their establishment. ~;1£~ Kelly R.
