AGENDA ITEM: Interim City Manager Compensation
DATE: September 8, 1999
SUBMITTED BY: David E. Thompson, City Manager
BACKGROUND: The previous City Manager resigned effective January 12, 1999,
and I was appointed to fill the position of City Manager on an
interim basis. At that time, I offered to work in that capacity with
no additional compensation. I erroneously believed that I would be
able to do the City Manager work on a part-time basis... just
enough to keep things on track while the City was seeking a
replacement for Mr. Jarboe. I also believed that the hiring process
for a replacement would only take a few months. Since that time,
the City Manager position has dominated my professional and
personal life. .
I do not intend to present a detailed argument for additional
compensation. The City Commission is well aware of my work
over the past nine months.
I am requesting additional compensation at the rate of 10% of my
base pay, retroactive to January 12, 1999, and continuing until the
~, new City Manager is hired. This ten. percent is consistent with
promotional increases in the Police Department. Funding is
available in the current Police Budget for 1998-99 to cover the
additional costs.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve additional pay for the Interim City Manager at 10% of his
base pay, retroactive to January 12, 1999, and continuing until a
new City Manager is hired.

Subject: City Manager Bonus
Date: October 1, 1999
A question has arisen as to how much money was approved as a bonus for the interim City
Manager at the last meeting. T'he following numbers are provided for your review:
Base Pay from January 12 to present was approximately $51,580
10% of that number is $ 5,158
Estimated Taxes approximately $ 1,702
Net Total approximately $ 3,456
This may provide a more accurate representation of the size of the bonus. I am not sure that any
of the City Commissioners knew the actual amounts that were involved.
I will have more definitive numbers next week when they are processed through the City. I hope
that this information is helpful to you.
