Over th e years the t r ee roots a n d groundcover grew across the pavered sidewalk area. To regain access of this walkway approxi mately 1/3 of the root syste m was damaged o r removed du r ing excavatio n. Based on a arboricu ltural measuring method a tree of t hi s size shou ld not ha ve roots removed closer t h an 9' to the basco The roots that were removed we r e approximately 5' from the trunk Removing roots 2~ and larger should be avoided because this can lead to an un stable root structure as well as damagi n g t h e abi lity of the trce to get nutrients and water. 90% ofthe canopy of this trec has developed on the southside which is also t h e direction of the 20% lean that the tree ha s. Th is tree has a risk offai lur e and t h e targets wou ld be the road a n d sidewalk. The 2 S~ Live Oaks suffer from poor shape ilnd structure. The requested removals are more for cosmetic rea so ns but would allow the other two oaks located on the left side of the ya rd to deve lop a more even canopy. The 11 ~ Sable Palm has Significant decay at the base of the trunk . Th is is mos t likely caused by a fu ngus tha t will eventually cause the pal m trunk to colla pse of suddenly fall witho ut warning. Th e 14 ~ Pa lm will most likely be damaged during t h e excavation of the root system on the 23" Laure l Oak. The palm is located within 3 -4' from thc Oak a n d the amou nt of gro un d d istu rb a n ce during t he ex cavation wi ll co m promise the stability of the pal m. It is my recommendation that t h e 2r Laure l Oak, (2) S" Live Oaks and 2 Pal ms be removed. I also r eco mm e nd to mitigate with (3) S-15' Sa ble Palms, (1) 8~ Liv e Oak with a spr ead of 15' and he ight of22-25' and (1) 4 w Live Oak with a spread of6-8· and height of 14-17'.
