A worldwide pandemic marked by a state of emergency, separations from and loss of loved ones, economic and business challenges, sheltering and quarantines, demands on our health care system and essential workers, food/housing/job insecurities, a new virtual culture, face coverings, social distancing, and - yes - scrambling for toilet paper. If you’re like me, you felt the highs and lows, but you believe we were fortunate to have travelled this journey together in our great city. In the spirit of optimism for the future, it helps to have a sense of humor. According to the Mayo Clinic, a good laugh can enhance your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulate your heart, lungs and muscles, and increase endorphins released by your brain. Laughing can relieve stress and pain. If you laugh enough, positive thinking can improve both your overall outlook on life. When you read this, our COVID numbers will have changed, but know that we are monitoring data closely, and we are serious about local decisions with your safety in mind. Please adhere to public health guidelines about hand-washing, face coverings, social distancing, and avoidance of risks in groups. This year, I hope you’ll consider checking out City platforms where we share information. These include public meetings and agendas, our website, official Facebook pages, the Nextdoor app, newspaper notices, and email subscriptions. Feel free to engage directly by official email or phone with elected officials or City staff. Think about serving on a Committee. We welcome your participation in local government! This month, the Commission will meet for our annual Visioning Session, and we have Commission meetings on Jan. 11 and Jan. 25. In other public opportunities, I’ll give a “State of the City” talk on Jan. 13 at Beaches Watch and I’ll share stories with former and current female Beaches mayors on Jan. 30 at the Beaches Museum. Thank you for the opportunity to serve another term as your Mayor. And, thank you for allowing all of us here at the City to serve YOU! In Gratitude and Humor, Ellen Glasser/eglasser@coab.us The City of Atlantic Beach Utilities Department performs drinking water testing for harmful bacteria such as Coliform/E. coli on a pre-approved rotating list of 30 residences around the city, and 8 deep wells at the water treatment plants, twice monthly. You may see one of our licensed plant operators at your residence carefully collecting the sample from an outside spigot where the water must be flushed for 3-5 minutes and the spigot cleaned of any possible contaminants. The water sample is taken, chlorine and pH levels are recorded, and the samples are taken to a lab where results are returned within 24 hours. The latest sample results taken in November were all returned from the lab with an “A” result, meaning Absent of Coliform/E. coli. These tests are just one of many that the COAB Utilities Department is responsible for to make sure you have safe drinking water. For more information, visit www.coab.us/utilities. MAYOR'S MESSAGE ELLEN GLASSER TESTING YOUR DRINKING WATER Congratulations and welcome aboard to new City Commission members Bruce Bole (left) and Mike Waters, who along with Mayor Ellen Glasser were administered oaths of office on Nov. 27. Mayor Glasser was re-elected and is now serving her second term. Also, special thanks to outgoing City Commission members Blythe Waters and Cindy Anderson for their service to our community.
