photosynthate production.
Inspection with a sounding
mallet indicating large
areas of internal decay in
the lower trunk. Visual
inspection showed multiple,
older torsion fractures on
the compression side of the
trunk. There is a large
depression in the soil on
the compression side of the
tree. The opposite side of
the root system is actively
lifting from the soil. This
indicates an active lean and
loss of root stability. If the
tree were to fail the tree
would fall directly onto the
home. The decay in the
trunk is too extensive and
upper canopy is too massive to adequately mitigate the risk of failure through canopy reduction
pruning. I recommend removal of this tree as soon as possible.
Image 3. Trunk actively leaning toward
home.
I inspected a large laurel oak on the north west side yard of the home with a trunk diameter
measurement of 29 inches DBH. The health of the tree is very good but the lower portion of the tree
has extensive decay and a large open wound at the base of the tree. Testing with a sounding mallet
indicated the entire lower portion of the trunk was decayed and the decay had spread into the upper
stem. This tree extends over the home as well and would strike directly onto the home if it were to fail.
I recommend removal of this tree as soon as possible.
