02-18-98vCULTURAL ARTS ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 18, 1998 MEETING
i
The Cultural Arts Advisory Board held its regular meeting on
Wednesday, February 18, in the Commission Chambers. Present
were: Alice Garland, acting Chairperson, Woody Winfree,
Lavinia!Kubiak, Nancy DeCandis, Rosemary Fletcher, Mayor
Suzanne Shaughnessy, and Board Coordinator, Carl Walker.
I
Alice Gartland, Vice -Chairperson, called the meeting to order
at 6:501PM, announcing with regret, that Karen Summers has
submitted her resignation from the Board due to other commit-
ments. Board members expressed disappointment over the de-
parture'of Karen and the leadership she has exhibited.
A motion' was made by Nancy DeCandis to approve the minutes of
the last; meeting, as written. Rosemary Fletcher seconded and
the motion carried.
Under ol;d business, discussion took place on the proposed
spring art exhibit(s). Various locations, including busi-
nesses such as Java Cafe, Sundog Diner, Shelby's, Bookmart,
etc. were suggested. It was also recommended that several
small exhibits be held instead of one larger exhibit. This
led to a proposal that the exhibit be held outdoors as a
"sidewalk art show" with the art being featured on easels.
Alice Garland will contact Joanna Fletcher to see if she will
undertake organizing the event. Tentatively, a date was set
for either May 3rd or 17th. This item will be further dis-
cussed at the next regular meeting.
i
It was again agreed that the summer art classes could be held
in June -July and the Concert in the Park in late September or
early October.
The existing two Board vacancies created by the resignations
of Cecile Purcell and Karen Summers were discussed and two
names were suggested as possibilities, Janelle Wagner and
Karin Clark. The Mayor hopes to appoint a replacement for
at least one of the vacancies at the next regular Commission
meetings.
Carl reported that, in addition to those two openings, there
were three more expiration of terms effective April 30 of
this year. In each case, the Board member is eligible to
be reappointed. This will be further discussed at the next
meeting to determine the status of these possible Board
openings'

Patricia Goeltz, a member of the Parks and Recreation Advi-
sory Board, was introduced. Patricia outlined the forth-
coming "Earth Day Celebration" to be held the latter part
of April. This year it is to be extended to a three-day
event. One of the projects is to improve the appearance of
the pavilion in Russell Park by having children paint tiles
which can be fired and placed on the pavilion supports and
the remainder of the building painted. Patricia asked that
the Board support this undertaking. By consensus, it was
unanimously agreed to endorse the project, as outlined by
Ms. Goeltz.
There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned
by Alice Gartland at 7:30 PM.
