01-21-98vCULTURAL ARTS ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES OF JANUARY 21, 1998 MEETING
The Cultural Arts Advisory Board held its regular meeting on
Wednesday, January 21, in the Commission Chambers. Present
were: Karen Summers, Chairman, Woody Winfree, Alice Gart-
land, Lavinia Kubiak, Nancy DeCandis, Rosemary Fletcher and
Board Coordinator, Carl Walker.
Karen Summers called the meeting to order at 6:45 PM, and
announced, with regret, that Cecile Purcell, has resigned
from the Board due to reasons of health. Cecile has sent a
letter to that effect and has included a suggestion for a re-
placement. Karen asked that the Board members think of other
suggestions for appointment so that those names can be given
the Mayor for consideration.
Karen began the discussion of the "wrap up" of activities for
last year by complimenting the Board for being productive and
stated that each member should be proud of their accomplish-
ments.
The first event reviewed was the Spring Art Exhibit. Lavinia
voiced that she thought it was well attended on the opening
day (Sunday) when the reception was held. However, there were
few - if any - attendees on the subsequent Sundays. It was
brought out that since the exhibit was in the school, stu-
dents were able to enjoy it during the week.
Alice Gartland advised that she had heard nothing further
from Commissioner Meserve about a location in Mayport for
the arts which could be used for exhibit purposes. A gen-
eral discussion followed regarding holding one Spring Exhibit
or to sponsor several smaller exhibits throughout the year.
Karen asked that the members think further on these options
so that the item can be further discussed and plans finalized
at the next regular meeting.
It was agreed by all that the summer art classes should con-
tinue and were highly successful. The instructor is willing
to again teach the classes and consideration should be given
to adult classes, especially pottery, due to the demand for
this type of instruction.
It was also agreed that the Concert in the Park was well re-
ceived, and should again be held. It was suggested that it
again be held under the trees in the same location as last
,year. There was also discussion in using a "different" Navy
band from last year and also to consider having a vendor pre-
sent for light refreshments and beverages.

It was unanimously agreed that the "First Night" event should
be again be held due to it's success. It was voiced that it
not be enlarged upon for various reasons, mostly logistical.
In summary, Karen restated that the Board, by consensus,
agreed that the Summer Art Classes, Concert in the Park, and
"First Night" should again be a part of the sponsorship of
the Board. The art exhibit in the Spring or consideration to
holding multiple smaller events on a more frequent basis will
be further considered at the next regular meeting. Karen
asked that members think of options and preferences for the
further discussion next month.
Karen urged all members to remain for the "First Night" Com-
mittee meeting since an overview/assessment will be done of
the event, with tentative plans for next year's celebration.
Board members thanked Karen for her leadership and dedication
during this year which attributed to the success of the Board
sponsored events.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned by Karen
at 7:30 PM.
